Circa 6th-7th century A.D.. Comprising a clavus decorated with various bright colours (green, brown, pink, blue, yellow) with stiff animal figures (dragons and stylised eagles) and a cockerel(?) inside the orbiculus. Cf. Forrer, Die Graeber und Textilfunde von Achmim-Panopolis, Strassburg, 1891, pl.XIII, no.4, for similar. 138 grams, 70 x 18.2 cm (27 5/8 x 7 3/8 in.). Acquired 1970s-1996.Property of a North American collector.London collection, 2016. Tabby technique on linen and wool. It is highly probable that this tapestry was part of a tunic decoration, the clavus with preserved orbiculus, running vertically on the breast and on the back of it. [No Reserve]
A CONTINENTAL VERDURE TAPESTRY PROBABLY 17TH CENTURY Depicting hunting dogs attacking a bear in a wooded landscape 247cm high, 300cm wide Condition Report: Wear, marks, knocks and scratches as per age, handling, use, and cleaning. Formerly part of a larger overall piece. Later backing and edging. Hangs fairly flat on pole/loop but with evident fold marks. Colours are uniformly faded and browned. the whole slightly fragile and with numerous areas of stitch repairs- but with fragility resulting in further loss, loose threading and open areas with backing visible.Please see additional images for visual references to condition which form part of this condition report. A TAPESTRY UPHOLSTERED KNOLE SOFA 20TH CENTURY, UPHOLSTERED IN FLEMISH 18TH CENTURY VERDURE TAPESTRY 110cm high, 165cm wide, 100cm deep overallProvenance: Christie's, 12th February 2003, Lot 29. Sold in these rooms, 4th October 2022, Chilham Castle: The Selected Contents from a Christopher Gibbs Interior, Lot 313. Condition Report: As catalouged the tapestry pre-dates the frame and the condition of this is worn and faded. It is created of various elements, some appear to have been joined together for this purpose. Some areas of infill. There are holes and rips as well as opening to the weave, this will require some work and attention to stabilise. There are pulled threads. Under this surface there is a grey lining layer which has become visibleThe removable cushions upholstered to their tops only There are three addiitional fragments together with the lot - these do not appear to match the cover but were perhaps sourced by the previous owner to attempt a restoration.There is one of the bullet shaped knops present but detached The twisted rope to secure the sides are later associated (indeed quite modern but not in great condition)Condition Report Disclaimer
Machine-made Verdure tapestry in two parts, depicting a classical landscape, narrow bead and egg border, each panel 123cm x 216cm.Qty: 2Condition report:Multiple random holes and snags throughout both. One is hessian-backed, the other not. Original colours of Pinks, blues and a few other colours are evident on the reverse stitching but most now have faded to differing shades of brown and beige. When laid side-by-side there is a definite darker band running down the centre of the conjoined image.
