St Anthony, 1527 A melon copper ingot Copper ingot, ‘bun-shape or hemi-spherical, weighing some 14kg, 15cm diameter. The story of this shipwreck is fascinating. In 1527, the St. Anthony, a ship belonging to King John III of Portugal, was returning home from Flanders with a valuable cargo of silver, copper, jewels, and cloth when it wrecked off the coast of Gunwalloe. Nearly half of the crew perished in the disaster. Among the cargo were 8,000 copper ingots, each weighing between 2.9 and 14.7 kg, with an average weight of 6.8 kg, bringing the total weight of the copper to over 54 tonnes.‘The vessel came ashore due to bad weather, with a loss of nearly half her crew. The survivors subsequently accused some prominent local gentry of robbery with violence, and as a result two commissions enquired into the wreck, and the case went to the court of Star Chamber. The incident is extremely well documented, and the wreck site was located in 1981, and subsequently designated under the Protection of Wrecks Act. The cargo included 8000 cakes of copper; 18 cakes of silver (one of which is now in the British Museum); silver vessels and specie; precious stones; tapestry; cloth and linen; 2100 barber’s basins; 3200 brass candlesticks; padlocks and weights; pack thread; needles and compasses; musical instruments; 4 complete sets of horse harness for the king; pitch and tar; brass and iron guns and other goods’ (Larn & Larn, B, 1995).An extremely rare artefact, with an incredible history.
