A BESSARABIAN KELIM worked with stylised flowers on a pale pink and ivory ground, 72"" x 35.5"", acquired from David Black, London 1993, and another BESSARABIAN tapestry, 19th century, acquired from C. IN THE STYLE OF MORRIS AND CO: AN ARTS AND CRAFTS TAPESTRY worked with the tree of life with large scrolling foliage around a tree with smaller surrounding leaves and foliage and with pomegranates to the upper branches. The tree against a blue background and between the motto `God saw that it was good` and `& the evening the morning were the third day`. 110"" x 84"". Provenance: Wadbury Manor, Frome, Somerset, Private collection. This tapestry bears a resemblance to the famous Woodpecker tapestry that now hangs in the William Morris Gallery, Walthamstow. This is perhaps the best known tapestry from the Arts and Crafts period representing Ovid`s tale of King Picus which is set against a similarly drawn tree with large scrolling leaves to the lower part, smaller leaves to the background and with fruit to the upper branches. The technique of contrasting larger design elements with smaller less brightly detailed foliage behind was used regularly by Morris as a way of creating variety and depth across a flat surface, the colours selected for this design are also reminiscent of his work. With two lines of text from Genesis, this tapestry depicts the `Tree of Life`, albeit with typically `Arts and Crafts` lilies and daisies to the background.
