A Louis XV Aubusson mythological tapestry, mid-18th century, Antoine Grellet, Niobe and her Children, with Apollo and Diana firing arrows at the figures in the central field, with Niobe standing in the left corner, within a picture frame border, with weaver's mark AUBUSSON A. GRELLET to the lower selvedge, approximately 239cm high, 524cm wideAccording to Homer's Iliad, Niobe had six sons and six daughters and boasted of her progenitive superiority to Leto, who had only two children, the twin deities Apollo and Artemis. Another tapestry with similar proportions and classical subject matter bearing his weaver's mark depicting the Triumphal Entry into Babylon is recorded in the collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art, Ohio. A similar, slightly earlier rendition of the subject of Apollo and Diana slaying Niobe's children, particularly in relation to the deities hovering in the upper left corner, is shown in Thomas P.
