MOORE HENRY: (1898-1986) English Sculptor and Artist. T.L.S., Henry Moore, one page, 4to, Much Hadham, England, n.d. (1947), to John Aldridge. An interesting letter pertaining to the policy of cleaning pictures by the Royal Academy. Moore asks his correspondent 'I don't know how you feel about the cleaning of pictures at the National Gallery, but I am hoping that you will join in an attempt to fortify the “authorities” there in their present policy.' Continuing 'The enclosed letter (no longer present) was actually drafted by John Piper… and left it to me to obtain as many signatures as possible from those who do not agree with the attempt of the R.A. to prevent any further cleaning.' Concluding 'So far, Graham Sutherland is the only other artist with who I have consulted, and he has said he is ready to sign.' Very minor signs of age related wear. VG John Aldridge (1905-1983) English Painter, Draftsman, Wallpaper Designer, a Royal Academician (RA) in 1963. John Piper (1903-1992) English Painter, Printmaker and Designer of stained-glass windows and theatre sets, Official War Artist in World War II. Graham Sutherland (1903-1980) English Artist, designed the tapestry for the re-built Coventry Cathedral, Official War Artist in World War II.
