A Flemish verdure tapestry, early 18th century, with two hunters and hounds in a verdant woodland setting, within a floral border woven with roses and other flowerheads, approximately 220cm high, 340cm wide Please note: the measurements are incorrect in the printed catalogue, the tapestry is a little shorter in width. The measurements are correct online.Condition Report: The tapestry bears the usual minor marks, nicks and wear overall consistent with age.Some greens are well-preserved though there is some fading to the colours of the sky, flowers and skin tones. The vertical borders aren't perfectly matched and have likely been altered in places. Areas of stitch repair overall (which are most pronounced to the hilly/sky background) plus some likely reweaving particularly to tree trunks and to a lesser extent the figures (including to legs).Selvedges later.Rips plus marks to backing.Please note: the measurements are incorrect in the printed catalogue, the tapestry is a little shorter in width. A Flemish tapestry panel with birds in a garden, early 18th century, possibly Lille, with a hawk, parrot and chickens in a formal garden setting showing rose bushes, a pond and view to a sprawling parterre beyond, later backed, 168 x137cm overall including later light blue selvedgesA tapestry which features a similar group of fighting birds and onlooking parrot before a comparable garden setting is in the National Trust collection at Packwood House, Warwickshire. Condition Report: The tapestry bears the usual minor marks, nicks and wear overall consistent with age.The colours are well-preserved to the lower part of the scene, however the sky and architecture are a little more faded. There is also an area of reweaving/repair to the sky.Some stitching along colour joins particularly the foliage, and one or two old repairs/restorations to grass, though quite subtle and minimal.Condition Report Disclaimer
A French 'Teniers' tapestry fragment, early 18th century, possibly Aubusson, with two rustic musicians standing on barrels, one playing bagpipes, in a verdant woodland setting, later backed, 187cm high, 135cm wide Provenance: Private Collection, The Manor House, Stanford in the Vale, Oxfordshire The present panel likely takes its inspiration from the rustic country celebrations painted by David Teniers the Younger, which provided popular source material for tapestry manufacture during the late 17th and 18th centuries. The motif of the bagpiper on a barrel appears in several of Teniers' paintings, including the 'Country Celebration' in the collection of the Museo del Prado, Madrid. Condition Report: The tapestry bears areas of surface wear and various old restorations overall, with a small handful of horizontal gapes/short tears. The skin tones, sku and costume of the central figure are quite faded but the foliage and some of the reds are well preserved. Jute backed.
