A Chinese rank badge 19th century, Guangxu period, and exceptional example of a silk tapestry insignia badge of a first rank military officer or a descendant of the Imperial bloodline displaying the mythical Qilin. The Qilin, itself a symbol of great good fortune is shown in a fantastic landscape of weatherworn rocks emerging from billowing water and waves motifs. The quality of the kesi, the clarity of colours and design indicate Imperial workshop manufacture. 32x31cm, a similar rank badge with Qilin 29x30cm and a fine silk tapestry woven insignial badge 19th century Xianfeng period displaying a tiger of the fourth military rank, the tiger displayed in a fantastic landscape against a woven gold thread ground. 29x30.5cm. Daniel O`Neill 1920-1974 ABRAHAM, ISAAC & JACOB Wool tapestry,8" x 9 1/2" (20 x 24cm), signed. This image is taken from the ceiling of the church of "Guh" in Ethiopia, a rock lawn church mentioned in "Churches in Rock" (see details verso). An inscription on the back suggests this work was connected to a Helen Laine of the Country Shop in St Stephen`s Green.
