Left part of original vintage Guinness advertising poster featuring a fun, colourful and great design using a scene from the Bayeux Tapestry depicting knights on horses armed with clubs, swords and spears below a decorative embroidered border at the top with the stitched style heading - Battle of Hastings 1066 - and the knight on a horse at the front holding a pint glass of Guinness as he looks back at the rest of the army. Missing lower border (Bottle of Guinness 1966). Artwork by Stanley Penn commemorating the 900 year anniversary since the historic Battle of Hastings. One of the world's most popular beer drink brands, Guinness is an Irish dry stout founded by Arthur Guinness in Dublin in 1759. Left part of the poster only, good condition, creasing, folds, tears. A French pastoral tapestry fragment, mid-18th century, loosely in the style of Oudry, depicting a flamboyant male figure in a rustic landscape, within a floral border, 267cm high, 103cm wideCondition Report: Areas of stitch repair to bottom border, and also to lower portion of grass and to coat of man.Some areas of old reweaving/restoration to top left, where there is colour variegation, further possible reweavings to costume and background.The wool is a little bit worn in places, though the colours are bright and quite well preserved.The lot is a fragment, so previously possibly part of a larger composition, and the borders have likely been adjusted.Later backed. An Aubusson 'seaport' genre tapestry, in the manner of designs by Joseph Vernet (1714-1789), second half 18th century, depicting a Levantine man holding a pipe to another man's mouth, beside further seated figures, the maritime background with a ship and a turret, within a picture frame border, 217cm high, 171cm wideFor two Aubusson panels with similar compositions after Vernet's 'Marines', please see Sotheby's New York, 27 April 2007, lot 55Condition Report: The darker blues, ochres and reds are relatively bright and well-preserved, though the skin tones and sky are somewhat more faded.The border was likely adapted and restored, and there is colour variegation there. The top border has some ruffling, perhaps also reduced or adjusted. The field has areas of tearing and slackening of the weave commensurate with age, and there are small areas of stitch and weave restoration overall, particularly to the ruin backdrop, of which parts are rewoven. Small patches of different thread have discoloured slightly, such as to the washerwomen's costumes.The backing is stable though a little frayed at the edges.Condition Report Disclaimer

A pair of Louis XVI pastoral tapestry panels, late 18th century, each with country figures within a central reserve surrounded by foliage and swags, on a pale ground, slight size variants, 229 by 140cms and 225 by 156cms (2)Condition Report: Each has minor wear and tear, including narrow apertures to the edges. Each of the sides and underside with some folding, border design appears reduced. A French or English tapestry fragment, probably mid-18th century, with a trompe l'oeil drapery flanking a cream ground worked with scrolling branches and flowerheads in the style of crewelwork, approximately 263cm high, 121cm wideCondition Report: The fragment may be one of a suite or pair. Minor wear overall, colours quite well preserved. The top margin has a woollier texture and varies slightly in design and may be associated. The curtain was likely not woven in one piece with the floral backdrop. A portion of the flowers to the lower right side of the panel has come slightly undone to the surface but overall the textile is stable.Below the curtain the weave is darker, but this is probably to give the illusion of shadow.Later lined and backed, some staining to backing.Condition Report Disclaimer
A pair of late 19th century French Aubusson tapestry window surrounds, each woven with drapes, tassels and flowers, each approximately 175cms wide, 276cms high; each mounted on associated later gilded pelmets, 180cms wide (4)Condition Report: Both slightly dirty and with muted colours from sunlight and atmosphere. Colour variants with some colours brighter in areas. Some old stitch repairs, later backing, some pulling to threads notably central floral panel. An Aubusson verdure tapestry with Orpheus enchanting the animals, early 18th century, the draped male figure portrayed playing the lyre in an abundant landscape with exotic birds, a vista of a formal garden beyond, 238 by 160cmCondition Report: The colours are quite well-preserved overall, and especially the dark blues and greens retain their rich tones.There are areas of reweaving to the birds' feathers and faces as well as the architectural background, and other small patches to the foliage where there are also strengthening stitches between colour joins. There are two longer seams of stitching to the right hand side above Orpheus' face. Style of François BoucherCourting couple, a pairOil on canvas Each 149 x 163cm (58½ x 64 in.) (2)It has been suggested that these decorative works were possibly cartoons for tapestry designs. Condition Report: Not relined. Each canvas is made up of two pieces sewed together evident from the horizontal line running across each canvas approximately 1/3 from the top edge. Craquelure, scratches, surface scuffs and losses scattered throughout. The work appears unvarnished causing a matte appearance. Paint thinning in areas reveals the canvas thread. Measurements including frame approximately 230 x 200cm. Splits and cracks with knocks and very slight losses to the frame (male standing).
