MANUEL BENEDITO Y VIVES (Valencia, 1875 - Madrid, 1963).Untitled.Oil on canvas.Damage to the frame.Signed in the lower left corner.Size: 54 x 44,5 cm; 66 x 57,5 cm (frame).Benedito y Vives begins his training at the School of Fine Arts of San Carlos in Valencia in 1888, where he studies under the direction of Salvá y Vilá, and in 1894 he enters the workshop of Joaquín Sorolla, who will be his main teacher. Two years later he travelled with him to Madrid, where he made illustrations for "La revista moderna" and "Blanco y Negro". He obtained a pension in Rome in 1900 and, after spending four years there, he travelled to France, Belgium and Holland, settling in Volendam in 1909. He produced portraits, still lifes, local types and landscapes, and his solo exhibitions included those held at the Sala Amaré in 1907 and at the "Blanco y Negro" salons in 1910. In 1918 he was appointed artistic advisor to the Royal Tapestry Factory and in 1923 a member of the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts (Madrid) and the San Carlos Academy of Fine Arts (Valencia). He taught at the San Carlos School of Fine Arts and later colour and composition at the San Fernando School, replacing his teacher Sorolla. He was subsequently appointed director of the Madrid School of Fine Arts. In 1925 he was appointed corresponding member of the Hispanic Society of America, corresponding member of the National Academy of Fine Arts in Lisbon, and in 1941 president of the board of trustees of the Sorolla Museum. After his death in 1963 the Casa-Museo Benedito was founded in Madrid. In his mature years he turned to portraiture; Alfonso XIII and Concha Piqué, among other prominent personalities of the time, posed for him. His awards include the first medals obtained at the National Fine Arts Exhibitions of 1904 and 1906; and the gold medals at the Hispano-French Exhibition of 1908, and at the International Exhibitions of Munich (1909), Brussels (1910), Buenos Aires (1910) and Barcelona (1911). Works by Manuel Benedito are held in the Prado Museum, the Fine Arts Museums of Valencia, Santander, Asturias, Havana and Buenos Aires and the Hispanic Society of America (New York), among others, and in prominent private collections such as the Jr. Sackar in Sydney.
AURELI TOLOSA Y ALSINA (Barcelona, 1861 - 1938)."Landscape and figures at dusk".Oil on canvas.Signed in the lower right corner.Size: 68 x 138 cm; 95 x 165 cm (frame). The present canvas shows a landscape worked in depth, with achieved perspective, perfectly defined in colours and shades. Its colour, brushstroke, theme, composition and general vision are typical of Aureli Tolosa: his natures are emotional, in them he pours his feeling, as well as in the peasants who always populate them.Tolosa y Alsina was initially a disciple of the French master and painter Justin Simon and later of the master Modest Urgell. From his youth he was noted for his technical skill and his inspiration, especially in the field of landscape painting, which is borne out by his enormous collection. He found numerous clients and powerful admirers among the Catalan and Spanish bourgeoisie and aristocracy, and worked on the decoration of bourgeois houses, such as the Palace of the Count of Figols and the Casa del Senyor Vitellin in the Plaça de Catalunya, as well as decorating the new headquarters of the Banco Americano. His popularity among the bourgeoisie made him much in demand as a private painting master; he thus came to have a large number of disciples and attained a high social standing. He took part in various art competitions and exhibitions in Barcelona, where he was awarded several prizes. His work includes paintings of landscapes and vases of flowers, but it was his fan paintings that earned him the status of a neat painter and excellent decorator. Also worthy of note are his imitations of antique paintings, as well as the tapestry, enamel and gilding of various works that he painted in his studio in the Plaza de Letamendi, in the city of Barcelona. He became very popular on the peninsula, and specialised newspapers such as La Esfera: la ilustración mundial or La Ilustración Artística, among others, often mentioned him as a great master. His presence in exhibitions and competitions at the national level was frequent and he was often awarded prizes. For example, he took part in the General Exhibition of Fine Arts in Barcelona in 1894, the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Madrid in 1930 and even in an exhibition of Spanish products held in Melilla in 1916. Although he painted individually, he was a member of the Artistic and Literary Society of Catalonia, based in the Sala Parés, which organised annual exhibitions in which its members - Catalan painters such as Modest Urgell, Joaquim Mir and José Masriera - exhibited their work. He also often collaborated with the Sala Busquets in Passeig de Gràcia, also in Barcelona. As has been said, he was a highly valued figure at local and national level, and was awarded numerous prizes, including the following: General Exhibition of Fine Arts of 1894. Painting Section Prize at the Exhibition of Plants and Flowers in 1895. 1st Class Medal. International Furniture Exhibition of 1924. Medal of Honour.
A mythological Flemish tapestryBrussels, mid to late 17th centurywoven in rich threads, depicting a courtly scene set in Carthage illustrating the story of Dido and Aeneas, Aeneas standing to the left and Achates kneeling to the right, Aeneas, resplendent in his armour, wafting into Dido's throne room on a cloud, the Queen of Carthage, seated on a throne which stands on an Oriental carpet, wearing an elaborate dress, a crown adorning her coiffured hair, her courtiers wearing typical tunics, flowing robes and some with turbans, the cityscape of Carthage visible to the middle distance to the right of the main field, the border on brown ground, filled with spiralling acanthus leaves and fruiting prunus,478cm x 308cmFootnotes:The present lot depicts the story of the doomed Queen Dido and the young Trojan prince Aeneas. This particular scene can be found in the Aeneid Book I, Line 550 where the Goddess Venus, advises Aeneas to go into the city of Carthage and meet the Queen, Dido who, she says, will welcome him. Aeneas, along with his loyal friend Achates approach Carthage and are concealed by a cloud, conjured by Venus. When they arrive at the court of Dido, they find many of their comrades who were lost and scattered in the storm. Achates asks Dido for help in re-building their fleet, which she agrees to. Dido says that she would like to meet Aeneas at which point Achates reveals his hitherto shrouded leader. The story of Aeneas was a popular one amongst the prestigious noble houses of Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries. Some Northern European Courts had sets of tapestries showing the story of Troy and claimed that these had come directly from Aeneas. Some European Royal families even claimed Aeneas as a direct ancestor. This is understandable since Aeneas arguably exemplified not just a link between Troy and Rome but the leap from ancient paganism to imperial civilisation. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: * TP* VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium.TP Lot will be moved to an offsite storage location (Cadogan Tate, Auction House Services, 241 Acton Lane, London NW10 7NP, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. HENRY FREDERICK: (1594-1612) Prince of Wales, the eldest son and heir apparent of James VI and I, King of England and Scotland, and his wife Anne of Denmark. A fine, extremely rare D.S., Henry P, as Prince of Wales, at the head, one page (vellum), oblong folio, n.p. (Richmond), n.d. (30th May 1611), in Latin. The attractive and boldly penned document is a Warrant for a grant of office and states, in part, 'Henry first-born son of the most mighty James, of England, Scotland, France and Ireland king, Prince of Wales, Duke of Cornwall and Earl of Chester, to all to whom the present letters might come greetings; know you that we of Our special grace, certain knowledge and mere motion have given and granted and by these presents do give and grant to our beloved and faithful Francis Crane, gentleman, the office of clerk to our council, our chamber at London or at Westminster or elsewhere appointed called or reputed or to be appointed, reputed or named the Prince's Council Chamber, and keeper of Our books and records there; and we have made, ordained and constituted the same Francis Crane clerk of Our council of Our chamber aforesaid and do make…..the said office with its appurtenances to the aforesaid Francis Crane, by himself or by his sufficient deputy or sufficient deputies for as long as it might please us, and further of Our fuller grace we have given and granted and by these presents do give and grant to the aforesaid Francis Crane…..the wage and fee of thirty pounds by year of lawful money of England, to be received and taken yearly by the hands of Our receiver general of Our treasury being in the hands of Our same receiver general for the time being to be paid yearly on the feasts of St Michael the Archangel and the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary by equal portions…..' Countersigned at the conclusion as examined by Thomas Stephens, Attorney General to the Prince of Wales in 1610 & 1611, and, most unusually, with a minute in English at the foot, also signed by Stephens, explaining the content of the document to the Prince, in full, 'This containeth a grant by your highness to Francis Crane gentleman of the office of clerk of your highness's council and keeping of your books and records in your council chamber during your pleasure with the fee of thirty pounds a year for exercise of the same office, payable by your receiver-general out of your treasure and is done upon signification of your good pleasure in this behalf by Mr [Adam] Newton your highness's secretary'. Autographs of Prince Henry Frederick are extremely rare as a result of his untimely death at the age of 18 from typhoid fever. Neatly inlaid to the upper and lower edges, very slightly irregularly trimmed to the left edge and with some very light, minor dust staining and age wear to the edges, none affecting the text or signatures, VGSir Francis Crane (c.1579-1636) English courtier and tapestry manufacturer, the founder of Mortlake Tapestry Works. Crane served both Prince Henry and his younger brother Charles, who was later crowned King Charles I, becoming auditor-general to Prince Charles in May 1617 and a member of his council in 1623. Crane was considered of sufficient social standing to become lay chancellor of the Order of the Garter in July 1626. Crane's fame rests on his establishment of the manufactory at Mortlake. Bearing his initials, the finest tapestries ever made in England are his lasting memorial. In 1618 James I's 'princely cogitation' led his privy council to enquire into certain possibilities of tapestry manufacture. Crane's proposals were accepted and, in August 1619, having been granted fees for the making of three baronets to offset initial costs, he acquired property at Mortlake for erecting workshops. These could accommodate eighteen looms, and by 1637 140 persons were dependent on the manufactory. During his lifetime, Crane's Flemish weavers, besides copying individual paintings, produced sets from seven major tapestry series. Sir Adam Newton (d.1630) Royal official, a native of Scotland, who was appointed tutor to Prince Henry in 1599. In October 1604 Newton had apparently been promised by the King the deanery of Durham, but when it became vacant there was competition for the post and Newton was able to call upon Prince Henry to support his claims, Newton was duly installed as dean on 27th September 1606; he then served as an absentee. In 1610 Prince Henry was given a separate household, in which Newton served as his secretary. Following the death of Prince Henry in November 1612 Newton became receiver-general in the household of Prince Charles, relinquishing to Thomas Murray (1564-1623) his claim to the secretaryship.Great hope and enormous expectations were invested in Henry, who died at the age of eighteen. 'The Flower of his House, the Glory of his Country, and the admiration of all Strangers', he 'epitomized the yearning of those who wished England to lead Protestant Europe in a great crusade against the might of Catholic Spain. He simultaneously embodied the aspirations of a new era in the arts, creating a court which would have rivalled the Medici grand dukes in Florence or that of Rudolf II of Prague. He formed the first royal collection of works of art, re-established the royal library, imported the first Renaissance bronzes (by Giovanni Bologna) into England, and purchased antique gems and medals. Major artists were recruited' including Isaac Oliver and Inigo Jones. James I 'found himself outshone by an heir whose far-ranging interests embraced not only the arts, but also the navy, equestrianism, garden-design, festivals and the sciences' (Roy Strong, Henry Prince of Wales and England's Lost Renaissance, 1986).An exceptional rarity - American Book Prices Current record only three other documents signed by Prince Henry as having appeared at auction in the last thirty years.
