In the manner of Howard & Sons for Morris & Co - A bench seat or sofa on ring turned and tapered simulated rosewood front legs with applied swivel castors, upholstered in Bird pattern jacquard-woven woollen double cloth, 163cm, height of back 83cm and seat height 38cm, S/D.The 'Bird' pattern was originally designed by William Morris in 1878 and the pattern was registered in the same year. It was originally designed for the walls of his drawing room at Kelmscott House. The fabric was probably made at the Merton Abbey Workshop. Morris himself referred to this type of fabric as woven wool tapestry, even though it is not technically a weave, but a double cloth.Provenance - Inherited by the present owner from their father Douglas Hickman, a prominent Birmingham architect. Douglas Hickman was a member of the founding committee of the Birmingham Victorian Society when it was formed in 1967, campaigning for Victorian and Edwardian architecture. He was also the author of 'Birmingham', a book about the architecture of the city published as part of the City Buildings series in 1970. After his death and upon his bequest, the sofa has been on loan to the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery and, after 30 years on loan to their collection, has recently been returned to the family.

†A Flemish or French 'Teniers' tapestry, 'The Fish Quay', in the manner of David Teniers the Younger, mid-18th century, woven in wool and silk, depicting fishing boats at sea beside a scene of figures at a market, before an architectural background, within a picture frame border woven with ribbon and fruiting vine, approximately 188.5 x 240.5 cm The present lot relates closely to the popular rural and market scenes inspired by the paintings of David Teniers the Younger (1610-1690), which included subjects such as the Kermesse and the Harvest. The scenes were woven by workshops across Brussels, Oudenarde, Lille and even London and Madrid. Due to their international manufacture, there is great variety in the interpretation of the scenes. The design of the current tapestry is more akin to earlier versions of the model, as the quay and boats gave way to large colonnades and architectural capriccios in later renditions of the scene. The present lot depicts a reduced version of the known composition, and shows it in reverse, which indicates that it may have been created from a secondary or even printed source. Guy Delmarcel addresses the Teniers tapestries and their widespread popularity in Flemish Tapestry, Tielt, 1999, pp. 352-363.See Christie's, 4 November 2010, lot 98, for a full-length version of this scene.Condition Report: Textile has disintegrated in areas resulting in significant horizontal tearing (see images). Mainly adjacent to the lower border and lower section of the seam. Various small tear overall. Restoration to upper right corner. Various small stitch repairs overall. The margins are folded backward apart from the top where it is still visible. Staples to the top joining the textile to the hanging fixture. Please refer to images for visual reference to condition.
