An exquisite vintage Burmese Kalaga tapestry Wall Hanging featuring padded figures, elephants and dragons covered in antique gold sequins and couched bullion threads. There are cut glass 'jewels' at four points on the boarder and moonstone like 'jewels' around the central motif. The traditional piece has been mounted on a tapestry effect jacquard fabric and backed with cotton. 109 cm x 72 cmcondition is generally good. There is some minor sequin loss and a couple of missing stitches around the elephants trunk.

A GEORGE II CARVED WALNUT OPEN ARMCHAIR ATTRIBUTED TO DANIEL BELL AND THOMAS MOORE, CIRCA 1735102cm high, 72cm wide, 59cm deep overallProvenance:Private Collection, LondonRetailer's label for Norman AdamsSee Adam Bowett, Early Georgian Furniture 1715-1740, page 180, plate 4:73, for a related chair with strikingly similar legs, supplied by Daniel Bell and Thomas Moore, with a November 1734 bill to the 'Honourable Counsellor Rider' of Sandon Hall, Stafford, 'To ten hansome Wallnuttree Chairs broad banister backs cutt in shape with scrole tops finneard with very good wood, loose compass seats, stuft in white Hessings with rich carved fore feet with Lyons faces on Ye Knees and Lyons Paws...with scrolls...to ye fore-rails...£27.10.00'.Whilst this armchair displays similar features to the Sandon Hall chair, such as the legs and compass seat, the exceptional piercing and carving to the back of this armchair and the carving to the arms and the seat rail seem more balanced with the quality and scale of the base.Geoffrey Beard and Christopher Gilbert, Dictionary of English Furniture Makers 1660-1840, records: Daniel Bell 'St Martin's Lane, London, cabinet maker 1724-1734,...recorded in partnership with Thomas Moore as early as 1724 when the firm supplied goods to Benjamin Mildmay, Earl Fitzwalter for Moulsham Hall between 1724-34; Thomas Moore is recorded as 'London, cabinetmaker 1734-d1738...at St Martin's Lane. The younger James Moore, son of the Royal cabinetmaker, died in 1734, and it seems probably that Thomas was a member of the family who at that date or earlier had entered into partnership with Daniel Bell.'See also Christie's Books, Masterpieces of English Furniture, The Gerstenfeld Collection, pages 80 and 207, plate 58, cat no. 52, for a pair of George II walnut side chairs, the legs with related acanthus drapery, bold lion masks and paw feet. Closely related chairs are seen in the 1741 painting by William Verelst of the Gough Family, and these Gerstenfeld chairs are also referenced as prototypes for an identical Chinese model in rosewood. The Victoria and Albert Museum, London, has in it's collection giltwood seat furniture with some related features made circa 1730 by chair maker Thomas Roberts junior made for Robert Walpole, Houghton Hall, Norfolk. Exhibited:Bessie Surtees House in 1934 This carved oak model of St. George and the Dragon is from the collection of the 7th Viscount Gort, Standish Robert Vereker (1888 - 1975), at Hamsterley Hall, Co. Durham. It was photographed by Country Life in the drawing room at Hamsterley in 1939 and 1940. The design is possibly inspired by a drawing attributed to the workshop of Raphael (Urbino 1483 - Rome 1520) in the National museum, Stockholm (inv. no. NM 297/1863); a 19th century albumen print of this drawing is in the Royal Collection, acquired by Prince Albert (1819-61) for the Raphael Collection (RCIN 851606). The painter and sculptor, Matthew Cotes Wyatt (1777-1862), produced a related sketch, possibly for the bas-relief in St. George's Hall, Windsor (RCIN 917613). A FLEMISH MYTHOLOGICAL TAPESTRY 'DON QUIXOTE' POSSIBLY LILLE, 18TH CENTURYWoven in wools and silks, depicting Don Quixote in armour standing between Sancho Panza and a further figure in armour, flanked by trees and with a hilly landscape in the distance324.5cm high, 254cm wideProvenance: Purchased Christie's, London, Fine Continental Furniture, Tapestries And Carpets, 1st October 1998, Lot 206 (£8,625). Condition Report: The tapestry is backed with natural linen stitched around the edge, with a band of velcro across the top.Overall there are losses and restorations including later stitching on sectional borders, re-stitching, patching and re-weaving of various dates. There are some holes, some gaping holes with underlying traces of glue notably around the upper figure of Quixote and to the finer work of the clothes and armour of the two other figures, some areas that are fragmenting.The colours are muted, with greens faded to blues and other fading and condition loss due to exposure to sunlight including to the central area. The base of the backing is loose at intervals allowing small areas of colour comparison with the reverse.Overall some resizing, the blue outer border is later around the acanthus-wrapped column border.Please see the additional photographs as a visual reference of condition.
