EDWARD ATKINSON HORNEL (SCOTTISH 1864 - 1933), SUMMER IN A JAPANESE GARDENoil on canvas, signed and dated 192561.5cm x 50cmFramedProvenance: Private Scottish collection.Note: born in Bacchus Marsh, Victoria, Australia. Shortly after he was born his parents left for Kirkcudbright in Scotland, where he remained for most of his life. He was associated with the Glasgow Boys and was strongly influenced by Japanese art, spending eighteen months in the country in 1894-5 with George Henry. He is noted for his flat tapestry-like paintings in jewelled colours, depicting girls in gardens and woodlands. No less than 183 of his paintings are held in public collections throughout the UK including every major Scottish Museum or gallery.
19th century woolwork tapestry by Mary Pilcher of Folkestone, stitched with a poem titled 'To my ever honoured parents', framed by birds and foliage, dated 1833, 16" x 13", framed; together with a 19th century sampler by Maria Crowsley, decorated with various birds and plants and inscribed 'Industry is the parent of every excellence and is valuable for youth', dated 1839 and 1840, 12.5" x 9", framed (2)
