Josep Grau-Garriga, Spanish, b.1929, Bon Diatardor, 1978, mixed textiles tapestry wall hanging, wool, rope and hemp, 220x210cm, labelled and signed. (may be subject to Droit de Suite) Note: Josep Grau-Garriga was born in Sant Cugat, Cataluna in 1929. He went on to train at the Barcelona Faculty of Fine Arts and is now recognised as an accomplished artist with work in several major museums and public collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. He was inspired by traditional tapestries such as those displayed in his native Catalonian churches. However, he found the traditional weaving methods limiting and therefore began to explore the possibilities of producing forms of three dimensional tapestry and consequently achieved a strong sculptural effect such as that evident in `Bon Diatardor.` Grau-Garriga also introduced other materials in addition to the traditional wools and silks used giving his works texture and adding to their abstract forms. The works were designed to be viewed at all angles and hence further challenging the traditional one dimensional tapestries that had once inspired him.
A 20th century silk embroidered floral panel in verre eglomise frame, together with a small wool tapestry depicting two children dancing to a lady playing a lute, two other framed pieces, a small piece of cream silk wrapped in paper with writing stating `a piece of bridal dress of Queen Victoria`, a handkerchief with a small crowed V monogram to corner, (6).
Nikoloz Nutsubidze b. 1973-, Tbilisi, Georgia, two woven abstract tapestries, one depicting a lady in a red top sitting on a chair by a tree, the other an abstract composition of red, yellow and black on a cream ground, (2). Note: Nikoloz Nutsubidze studied at the Tbilisi State Academy of the Arts between 1991-97, in 1998 he became a director at the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts Tapestry Museum where he continues to hold the position. Since 2007 Nutsubidze has been a lecturer at Ilia Chavchavadze State University. Since 1997 he has exhibited at festivals, galleries and museums in Italy, Spain, China and Georgia.
