Aristide Maillol (1861-1944) Woodcut 'Georgiques' Woodcut in sanguine on paper depicting stylised branches with fruit, artist's monogram stamp outside border to bottom left. 'Georgiques' Aristide Maillol was born in 1861 Banyuls-sur-Mer, France. In 1881, he moved to Paris to study art, and in 1885, enrolled in l'École des Beaux-Arts. Greatly influenced by the Nabis,a group of French artists whose work was composed of decorative patterns, Maillol excelled at tapestry and eventually opened a workshop that would gain him acknowledgement for revitalizing this art form in France.
