A rare mid-16th century Spanish tapestry wall hanging fragment, part of a larger tapestry which originally hung in the cathedral of Girona, as documented by Heinrich Göbel in 'Wandteppiche', his series on tapestries printed in 1928, depicting two full-length figures of shepherds holding crooks, one with a whistle, a dog with spiked collar at the foot of one figure, a woodland with deer and buildings beyond, 164cm x 121cm. Provenance: purchased by the vendor's parents from Peta Smyth Antique Textiles; accompanied by a copy of the purchase receipt, dated 23rd March 1998, stating that the tapestry was part of a series relating the life of Christ and was woven in Barcelona by Joan Ferrer in 1561.
Late 19th century tapestry panels, with geometric design of rosettes and fleur du Lys over an amethyst colour ground stitched on to a deep indigo linen back cloth. the whole is supported with a carpet weave wool runner remnant of all over strie pattern. (one very long panel approx 560cms and others) Some fading to the smaller panels. Also an embroidered altar cloth in gold on an amethyst velvet ground, the border embroidered with stylised trailing lotus design and finished with corresponding block cut silk fringe. (qty)
