A Flemish tapestry fragment, late 17th century, probably previously a border, woven with seated figures and animals amongst fruiting foliage, below a band of flowerheads and fleur-de-lys, approximately 33cm high, 278cm wide; together with a fragment of floral embroidered silk, possibly English, late 18th century, 198cm wide, 66cm high (2)Condition Report: Both are fragments from larger pieces, and incomplete. Colours typically muted see photographs for details and mounts. The tapestry fragment was later strengthened with linen fabric and stitching to the rear. It was also adapted with various trims and bears some rivets and staples presumably from having been previously mounted/attached. The woven textile itself has discoloured/faded but aside from a few stitch repairs looks overall in presentable shape. The silk fragment has an area of tearing to the main body, as well as some grey marks, staining and repairs. The edges are also slightly frayed. This textile was also later backed, and looks to be lined. Condition Report Disclaimer
A Continental 'Teniers' tapestry, 18th century, possibly Brussels, emblematic of Spring and fertility, depicting a shepherd with sheep, a milk maid milking a cow and figures in the background, approximately 249 by 271cmThe milkmaid seated prominently in the foreground is a recurring feature in genre tapestries of milking scenes after Teniers, see for example Sotheby's New York, 17 October 2015, lot 731The unusual composition of the present tapestry may also have been influenced by the influential 'months' tapestries from the workshops of Gilles, Urbanus and Jan Leyniers, woven during the late 17th/18th centuries. In this series, the month of June is rendered as a sheep shearing scene. See Sotheby's London, 1 November 2005, lot 163Condition Report: The textile is restored overall, including areas of significant re-weaving to the background and figures. This has resulted in some waviness to the texture of the work. It does feel stable overall. There is discolouration to the sky, animals and background, though some of the figures' costumes and foliage have retained vibrant colour. Later backed and strengthened. The selvedges are probably associated.Condition Report Disclaimer
A Louis XIV Aubusson historical tapestry with Dido and Aeneas resting, last quarter 17th century, possibly after the designs by Giovanni Francesco Romanelli (Italian 1610-1662), depicting the lovers in a verdant landscape, the borders woven with acanthus overall, the top border centred by a Baronial coat of arms, 264 by 218cmThis tapestry may depict an episode from the story of Dido and Aeneas, one of the tales from Ovid's Heroides, which revolved around legendary historical and mythological women and was a popular subject for tapestry weavers in France and Flanders alike. A tapestry depicting this composition is in the collection of the Museo Piersanta, Matelica, Italy. That series is said to follow Romanelli's influential cartoons, which were most notably used for tapestries by the Flemish workshop of Michiel Wauters. A circa 1660 Aubusson tapestry of similar design in reverse is in the collection of the Museum of Decorative Arts, Prague.Condition Report: The colour scheme predominantly consists of yellows, browns, blues and greens, though some of the pinks have been preserved. The tapestry is variously restored to the borders and central field overall, and there are some areas of stitch repair, including in thick threads to the foliage. There is also colour variegation to margins and some losses there, presumably when the tapestry was later backed.
