A PAIR OF FRENCH EMPIRE ORMOLU AND PATINATED BRONZE 'RETOUR D'EGYPTE' CANDLESTICKS ATTRIBUTED TO CLAUDE GALLE (1759-1815), EARLY 19TH CENTURY Each with triple Egyptian female masks beneath the nozzles, feet to base of stems, spreading circular bases with palmette decoration 28.5cm high, the bases 13.5cm diameter Literature: This model of candlestick by Galle is illustrated and described on page 146, no.76 in "L'heure le feu la lumière: Les Bronzes du mobilier national 1800-1870", Marie-France Dupuy-Baylet, 2010. The pair in the book were delivered in 1807 for the Emperor Napoleon's bedroom in the Pavillon du Butard at Celle Saint-Cloud where they were described in the inventory as "two candlesticks with antique green base and stem, 3 Egyptian heads and gilded bobeches". Each have been set with modern electrical bulb fitments inserted into top but lack the wiring which will need to be fitted for electrical use. In addition, both have had bases drilled for use with wiring. Base edges with knocks and marks and with blacking applied to underside. Shades modern. The column of the shorter candlestick is twisted. Condition otherwise good. Crests 19th century. Marks clear, drip-pans marked with maker and silver standard mark.
A pair of 19th century Viennese enamel and silver mounted candlesticks by Herman Boehm, Vienna, circa 1867-1874 the integrated drip pans painted with delicate scrolling foliage on cylindrical nozzles painted with gods, the cylindrical columns interrupted by chased and enamelled collars with terms in tricorn hats, raised on inverted tulip bases, each painted with four classical scenes, including Minerva and a Muse, Hercules slaying a Centaur, Mars and Venus, the foot with floral and geometric champleve, 23cm high Both in somewhat neglected condition, but beneath the dirt look to be in fair to good order, one with some scratching to the enamel around the sconce which is slightly bent out of shape, a further chip just beneath the sconce to one side of the stem, metalwork heavily oxidised but traces of enamelling showing on the raised parts, main body of the enamel looks to be good although some of it is covered in old melted candle wax, the other candlestick with wax again covering the sconce but certainly some loss of enamelling around the sconce, otherwise looks to be complete although the wax does cover some of the lower areas, foliate scroll enamelling to the undersides, equally looking to be in fair to good order.PLEASE NOTE:- Prospective buyers are strongly advised to examine personally any goods in which they are interested BEFORE the auction takes place.
