A rare Sèvres blue-ground chamber candlestick (bougeoir), dated 1767The bleu-lapis ground band edged with gilt dentil borders, the centre painted with a flower garland and foliate garland, the blue-ground sconce decorated with a gilt scrollwork border, 16.2cm long, interlaced LL monogram in blue enclosing date letter O, indistinguishable painter's mark (minor wear)Footnotes:This shape of bougeoir is rather rare. A bleu-céleste example is in the Frick Collection, New York, illustrated in Brunet/T. Préaud, Sèvres - des origines à nos jours (1978), p.157, no. 100, and another in the Walters Art Museum, Baltimore (accession no. 48.715). Another example was sold in the John Shearer Collection at Christie's London, 25 November 2014, lot 32, and a green-ground one at Christie's Monaco, 16 June 1990, lot 93.Préaud mentions that candlesticks are unfortunately very vaguely described in the Sèvres archives, so it is impossible to distinguish the different shapes described as ordinaire, ancienne and nouvelle. The prototype for the model in soft-paste biscuit is still kept at the Sèvres manufactory (Brunet/Préaud, ibid., p. 157).For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

PE 5131. The 1770 inventory of the Japanese Palace records under this inventory number 'Zwölf Stück Tafel-Leuchter, mit vergoldten Rändern, und kleinen Blumen nach Indianis. Mahlerey, 10 1/2. Zoll hoch' [twelve candlesticks with gilt rims and small flowers after Indian painting]. According to a delivery specification thirty such large candlesticks were delivered to the Japanese Palace in 1737 (quoted by C. Boltz, Japanisches Palais-Inventar 1770 und Turmzimmer-Inventar 1769, in Keramos 153 (1996), p. 82 and p. 98).
