A pair of Continental, probably Russian, ormolu candlesticks in Empire style, circa 1810, the engine milled urn sconces each above three adorsed maidens' busts with feathered diadems, the tapered, engine milled and reeded shafts above the caryatids' slippered feet, on circular socles with raised foliate cast rims, 29cm high, bases 14cm diameter The model of this candlestick with its three elegant caryatids is an iconic design of the early 19th century, popularised by the likes of French bronzier Claude Galle and elaborated on by metalworkers across Europe. The characteristic floral engine milling and the unusual headdress of the caryatids is similar to Russian examples, such as those sold at Christie's London, '500 Years Decorative Arts Europe', 9 June 2011, lot 264 An unusual feature of the present candlesticks are the slippers worn by the maidens, which resemble the soft fabric shoes fashionable at the beginning of the nineteenth century
