A Victorian Silver and Tortoiseshell Candlestick, by J. Batson and Son, London, 1899, the pierced tapering stem on square base with foliate borders, with foliage engraved detachable nozzle, filled; Together With: A Five-Piece George V Silver and Tortoiseshell Dressing-Table Set, by Charles and Richard Comyns, London, 1924, comprising: a hand-mirror; a pair of hair-brushes; a clothes-brush and a comb, the candlestick 14.5cm high (6). There is some wear to the marks. There is some further overall surface scratching and wear, consistent with age and use. The wear is noticeable as a softening to the high points. There are some minor scratches to the tortoiseshell. The teeth on the comb are slightly detached from the silver back.
A George III Silver Chamber-Candlestick, by Robert Hennell, London, 1784, circular and with beaded rim, the central socket with detachable nozzle and with leaf-capped handle, engraved with the Middleton crest, 17cm wide, 8oz 2dwt The crest is very possibly that of Charles Middleton the celebrated naval office who went on become First Lord of the Admiralty and later played a crucial role in the abolition of the slave trade. He was created Baron Barham in 1806.
