BISEI: AN IVORY OKIMONO DEPICTING A MILLER AT WORKBy Bisei, signed BiseiJapan, Meiji period (1868-1912)The miller seated on a reed mat and firmly gripping a wooden staff to craft two millstones, one on its side and the other lying down at his feet. A woodblock with two mallets resting on top, positioned next to the miller, with several other tools on its side. His robes decorated with various brocade patterns with his tobacco pouch and manju netsuke attached to his belt alongside his kiseruzutsu opened to reveal a thin pipe. His face is carved with an expression of calm determination, finely engraved and stained with naturalistic features. ICHIYOSAI SOKO: A RARE IVORY OKIMONO DEPICTING A KISERU (PIPE) MAKER WITH HIS SONBy Ichiyosai Soko (Munehiro), signed Ichiyosai SokoJapan, Meiji period (1868-1912)Finely carved, the tall craftsman standing next to his workbench carving a narrow pipe with an awl, his mouth open in a joyous expression as he watches his son play. Dressed in an elaborate robe decorated with brocade patterns, his sagemono secured in his obi, the young boy wearing a kinchaku (purse) secured at his waist. The child holds a small string attached to a toy fish pulled on four wheels. The carver's bench with one large removable drawer below a shelf filled with bamboo shafts and a pair of drawers, all beneath the worktable filled with tools; several finished kiseru are mounted on the side of the table while two straps are attached to the other side to transport the small workbench. He is looking fondly at a young woman seated on a bundle of sticks and holding a pouch and pipe case in her right hand. Large peony and hibiscus blossoms wrapped in reed mats, one resting in a finely carved basket, are attached to both ends of his carrying pole. The man rests on a reed mat set on a naturalistically rendered ground. MINKO: A RARE AND IMPRESSIVE UMIMATSU (SEA PINE) KISERUZUTSU OF A CORAL FISHERMANBy Tanaka Juntoku Minko (1735-1816), signed Minko 岷江Japan, Tsu, late 18th to early 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)Of senryu-zutsu type. The large section of umimatsu with stunning greenish marbling and typical concentric, reddish inclusions, carved as an exotic coral fisherman, also known as a South Sea Islander, standing on a rock embellished with inlaid antler barnacles, holding in one hand a large branch of coral, the other hand is held close to the face to secure the pipe. The eyes are inlaid in bone with red and black pupils. The cord channel runs through the right arm of the islander. With a bamboo and silvered metal pipe.LENGTH (without pipe) 21.6 cmCondition: Typical crackling and minor losses to the material as are to be expected. A small section of the inlaid coral is lost near the top. Generally, in very good condition.Provenance: Family collection of either Felix Tikotin (1893-1986) or his son-in-law Louis (Loek) Borensztajn (1935-2021), Netherlands. Felix Tikotin (1893-1986) was an architect, art collector, dealer, and founder of the first Museum of Japanese Art in the Middle East. He became one of the world's leading collectors of Japanese art, starting at the age of 18, and continued to collect and work as an art dealer in Berlin in the 1920s. In the 1930s Felix Tikotin fled from the Nazis and hid his collection in the Netherlands. After the war, he decided that his collection should be taken to Israel, where in 1959 and with the help of Abba Hushi, who was the mayor of Haifa, The Tikotin Museum of Japanese Art was established. Signed to the back SOKEI - the artist most likely a pupil of Sokoku.LENGTH 20 cmCondition: Good condition. A LOT WITH TWO KISERUZUTSU WITH POUCH AND TONKOTSU, EDO - MEIJIJapan, Edo period (1615-1868) - Meiji period (1868-1912)The first antler kiresuzutsu of muso-zutsu type, carved to one side with a lobed reserve containing a stylized long-snouted rain dragon, below a pierced lattice, surmounted by the cord attachment in the form of a reishi; together with a pipe (kiseru), a stone ojime, and a tobacco pouch (tabako-ire) crafted from leather and with a metal kanamono (pouch fitting) depicting a samurai feeding a dog. The second of muso-zutsu type, made from antler, carved with a lobed reserve enclosing flowers to the lower area and with a rain dragon forming the cord attachment below the rim, the (associated) top carved with a landscape; together with a pipe, a stone ojime, and a wood tonkotsu. Condition: With wear, and shallow surface scratches. The first with a crack to the backside and losses. The second with a crack to the rim and replaced top. Overall, still presenting very well. Provenance: Collection of Ted Adameck, thence by descent in the same family. Ted Adameck (1924-2019) was a legendary collector of Netsuke, active for many decades, operating two antique shops in Honolulu and writing countless articles and books on the subject as well as many others on Asian art and culture. No chips or cracks.The gilt metal mount to the bowl is loose and the gilt finish is worn. The two metal mounted rims of the plates are also worn. The glass of the plates is a little scratched and one of the rims appears to have re-glued. There is evidence of a small area of polishing at the base line of the four-branch candelabra. The lip of the spout on the pipe-form bowl is a little rough - possibly shallow chipping.

A Royal Doulton Lambeth novelty pipe rest. Modelled as a man smoking with an arm around a barrel, H9cm Condition Report: Overall in good-very good condition. Would benefit from a clean. There is a small hole to the hairline of the figure however it appears this was present pre-glazing. No obvious cracks, chips or restoration. Some uneven surfaces and glaze.
