**A FRENCH OXY-ACETYLENE WELDING-TORCH, BY TRADITION THE FIRST USED IN THE UNITED STATES, IMPORTED 1906 of brass with pierced hollow grip, each gas-pipe with ribbed terminal and fitted with a thumbscrew cast with a stylised fleur-de-lys in low relief, with fabric label attached typed `This is the first Oxy-Acetylene Welding Torch used in this country - 1906. It was imported from France by the Worcester Pressed Steel Company to weld Pressed steel` 56 cm; 22 in overall Provenance JWHA Inv. No. 1989 The `Oxygen Lance` was invented by Menne in Germany in 1901 followed by the invention of the oxyacetylene blowpipe in Paris by Charles Picards the following year. The filler metal used was, by accident, sufficiently high in silicon to prevent the formation of excessive hard white iron. In 1903 oxyacetylene welding was applied commercially in Europe.
A folder containing assorted military shoulder flashes, together with a board mounted with various shoulder and collar dog badges, and three larger metal cap badges CONDITION REPORTS Fabric badges with various wear, stains and some fraying etc to edges. Please see photographs. Metal items also with some wear, denting and scuffs. Please see photographs. The large metal badges have screw threads to back and no further attachments and the central badge has three loops to the back and no further attachments. The small metal badges which are mounted with pipe cleaners on to a piece of card have various shapes of loop attachments. Some of these appear to be scuffed and bent and may have had some repairs. The badges themselves with various dents and mis-shaping and discolouration.
An unusual early 20th century Continental bronze automaton clock decorated with figures, a pipe smoking male figure with nodding head to left operating the tongue of a dog seen looking through a central window, a courting couple depicted to the right of the white enamel clock face (the whole modelled as a log cabin).
A Prussian M1889 cavalry sword, straight pipe backed blade 32”, DE at point, marked crown/Erfurt on one side at forte and Otto Mertens, Solingen on the other, pierced and slotted semi bowl guard, incorporating Prussian eagle, plain pommel, composition semi pistol shaped grip, in a plated scabbard for Highland officer’s sword, with 2 rings, button chape. GC
A Royal Naval officerÂ’s sword, c 1830, broad, curved, pipe backed blade 31½Â”, etched with crowned 1816-37 Royal Arms and supporters and crowned fouled anchor, within panels, heavy regulation brass hilt bearing crowned fouled anchor, turn down inner portion, lionÂ’s head pommel and backstrap, wirebound sharkskin grip, in its leather scabbard with brass locket and chape, the locket with frog stud and makerÂ’s panel of “Symons Devonport” . GC, the blade retaining some original polish (small dark pitting patches and small nicks to blade edges, scabbard leather crazed). Plate 9
An early 18th century brass barrelled flintlock mail coach blunderbuss, 31½Â” overall, 2 stage barrel 16¼Â” with raised moulding at breech, London and makerÂ’s proofs, and engraved “London & York No 2”, the later lock with swan neck cock and unbridled frizzen, the plate deeply re-engraved “Forth”, fullstock with brass mounts including long strawberry leaf engraved butt plate tang, baluster throat pipe and later trigger guard, sideplate, escutcheon and ramrod pipe. A Third Reich Naval officerÂ’s sword, plain pipe back blade 29½Â”, by WKC, gilt brass hilt with lionÂ’s head pommel, wire bound white ivorine grip, and folding guard, the small folding rear guard stamped with eagle and swastika and number N1950, in its brass mounted leather scabbard, mounts retaining traces of gilt, locket also numbered N1950, chape stamped with eagle and swastika. Good Condition. Plate 11 Note: WKC Stahl-und-Metalwarenfabrik of Solingen have confirmed that this sword was manufactured 1.11.1937 and puchased 11.12.1937 by Marc Schiefferdecker.
A Royal Naval Officer’s sword, c 1835, curved, pipe backed blade 30”, lightly etched with crown, fouled anchor and crowned 1816-37 R Arms within panels, copper gilt half basket hilt incorporating crowned fouled anchor, turn down inner portion, lion’s head pommel and facetted backstrap, wirebound sharkskin grip, in its leather scabbard with gilt locket, middle band and chape, 2 rings; together with a post 1902 RN sword belt and slings and a dress knot (AF). Very Good Condition for age, retaining much original poolish to blade, and approx 50% gilt to hilt and scabbard mounts (minor pitting patches to blade edges, scabbard leather some wear) Plate 23

An unusual 1796 pattern light cavalry officer’s sword, heavy curved pipe backed blade 34”, lightly etched overall with oriental style foliate panels, steel stirrup hilt with langets, unusual forward sloping pommel into plain backstrap, wirebound fishskin grip, in steel scabbard with 2 rings. An 1796 pattern Georgian officerÂ’s dress sword, slightly curved, pipe backed blade 31½Â”, finely etched for two thirds length with crowned 1801-16 Royal Arms on trophy of flags, stylized urn, trophies of arms and instruments, laurel wreaths, foliage and scrolls, heavy steel facetted hilt with squared curl quillon, langets, knucklebow into forward sloping pommel and backstrap, wirebound dark fishskin grip. Good Condition (minor pitting stains). Plate 24
A French 32 bore brass barrelled and brass framed flintlock boxlock pocket pistol by Mathe, Paris, c 1800, 8” overall, integral octagonal brass barrel 3” with ramrod pipe beneath and replacement steel ramrod, frame engraved “Mathe, Paris” in simple oval wreaths, top thumb safety which also locks the frizzen, slightly rounded and fluted butt with chequered panels. Good Working Order and Condition (safety catch inoperative). Plate 29
A cased double barrelled 14 bore percussion sporting gun, 46¾Â” overall, Birmingham proved twist barrels 30” engraved “London” on top rib; locks engraved with scrolls and “Manton”, walnut stock with chequered fore-end and wrist and with scroll engraved steel mounts including elaborate pineapple trigger guard finial. Good Working Order and Condition (front ramrod pipe missing, barrels lightly pitted overall); also a good 36 bore percussion underhammer walking stick gun, browned twist barrel 32¼Â” with London proofs, action engraved “Edwd. London Gun & Rifle Maker, 51 London Wall, London”, walnut handle with thread for attachment of shoulder stock, the hole filled by an engraved screw when not in use, together with its nicely figured and polished stock with engraved steel mounts and an interchangeable 7” browned twist barrel; all contained in a green baize lined fitted mahogany case, the lid with a large brass escutcheon engraved with a crest, containing a 30 bore pincer mould, plain bag shaped copper flask, nipple key with pricker, turnscrew, good quality shot flask with German silver charger, mainspring clamp, barrel key/ nipple key for the walking stick gun, Kynoch cap tin, cloth wad bag, etc. The whole in Good Clean Condition Plate 41
A mid 18th century 18 bore flintlock holster pistol by Griffin, 15” overall, 2 stage barrel 9” with London proofs, slightly rounded lock with swan neck cock and unbridled frizzen, signed “Griffin” with plain walnut fullstock and brass mounts including long spurred butt cap, openwork sideplate and baluster ramrod pipe. Good Working Order and basically Good Condition (extensively restored). Plate 44

Plus a BR Western Class ‘Western Gladiator’ RN D1016. Plus 13 passenger coaches/parcels vans by Lima and Mainline. 6 of them are BR (W), 5 BR Inter City and 2 are LMS/BR (M). All rolling stock boxed, minor/some wear. Contents mainly VGC-Mint, Cab requires relocating.
DeMILLE CECIL B.: (1881-1959) American Film Director & Producer, Academy Award winner. A good vintage signed and inscribed 8 x 10 photograph of DeMille standing in a three quarter length pose before a model of a sailing boat. He holds a pipe in one hand. Signed in fountain pen ink at the base of the image, partially across a darker area although legible. VG
BROOKS RICHARD: (1912-1992) American Film Director, Academy Award winner. Signed and inscribed 10 x 8 photograph of Brooks standing outdoors in a half length pose, smoking a pipe, alongside a wooden sign bearing a warning in German and English, on the set of $ (The Heist, 1971). Signed in bold black ink to a light area of the image and dated 1984 in his hand. A couple of very slight, extremely minor corner creases, VG
TITO JOSIP BROZ: (1892-1980) Yugoslav Revolutionary and Statesman, Prime Minister of Yugoslavia 1943-63 and President of Yugoslavia 1953-80. Vintage signed 4.5 x 6.5 photograph of Tito in a half length pose wearing his uniform and curiously smoking a cigarette lodged into the end of a pipe. The original Camera Press of London press portrait is from an image by Karsh of Ottawa and bears the original printed caption to the verso. Signed by Tito with his name alone in dark fountain pen ink, across a slightly darker area of the image although legible. VG
A Continental porcelain oval plaque, late 19th Century, painted with a head and shoulders portrait of Ruth, after Charles Landelle, together with a similar oval plaque painted with a head and shoulders portrait of a bearded gentleman wearing a hat and smoking a pipe, approx 8.5cm x 6.5cm, each within a gilt frame and glazed and ebonized display case. Note: the original three quarter length portrait of Ruth in the Cornfield by Charles Landelle is in the Shipley Art Gallery in Gateshead.
