Sussex – Archaeology – Bosham Estate deed on five large sheets of parchment dated 1898 being the conveyance of Lord Fitzhardinge’s Estate at Bosham Sussex with extensive schedules and a very fine estate plan with bright colours. A particularly interesting feature of this document is that the plan signifies the location of ‘Site of Palace’. This was finally excavated by Barry Cunliffe in 1960 after Roman remains were accidently discovered by workmen digging a trench for a water pipe. What he discovered proved to be indeed a palace - one of the most significant archaeological sites in Britain. It seems remarkable however that such a site was so located and its significance as a ‘Palace’ rather than a ‘Villa’ or any other such Roman structure on this document indicating that the tradition that the building was a palace must have been handed down in local belief for almost 2 000 – and yet never really believed by the archaeological community !

ERIC DE MARE (1910-2002) A collection of 17 black and white photographs of the final journey of HMS Belfast, including Looking out into the Thames from King George V Dock, Entering the River, Bridge and Gun Turrets, Pilot instructing a tug, Ulstermen pipe her home, Guns, Bunting, Leaving King George V Dock at Dawn and Radar, each titled in ink and with photographers stamped mark to the reverse, the largest 4 1/2" x 6" Eric De Mare (1910-2002) Described as one of the greatest British architectural photographers by the Times in 2002 (The Times, Obituary, Tuesday 5 February 2002), Eric de Mare was one of the foremost photographers and architectural authors of his generation. He published his first book Britain Rebuilt in 1942 and in the subsequent years many more books and articles followed, including The Canals of England (1950), Bridges of Britain (1954), London`s Riverside (1958), City of Westminster: Heart of London (1968), Photography and Architecture (1961), Wren`s London (1975), and A Matter of Life or Debt (1983). He also held the post of editor of the Architects Journal from 1943-1946. By 1956 Eric De Mare was commissioned to travel through England to photograph industrial sites and buildings, which resulted in the 1958 publication of The Functional Tradition in Early Industrial Buildings, written by J M Richards and including de Mare`s photographs. However, by the 1960s the focus of his photographic work changed and he tended to concentrate on the sculptural quality of the modern power generation plants. His pioneering achievement was reviving interest in the architecture of post-war industrial Britain overlooked by the majority, and his work was influential to a whole generation of photographers and architects. Norman Foster called his work "a social conscience of visual values - more valid than ever". A monograph of his work was published by Robert Elwall in 2000 in the RIBA Architecture Camera series and The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) in London held an exhibition of his work in 2010 (7 October to 24 November). Provenance: The descendants of Eric De Mare.
