OSTERMAN, COPENHAGEN, CIRCA 1720 with tapering grooved barrel formed with a long sighting flat, chiselled with foliage over the breech and fitted with silver fore-sight, rounded lock signed in a panel beneath the pan and chiselled with foliage over the tail, the cock and steel each decorated en suite (the steel parts burnished), figured walnut full stock, moulded over the fore-end, carved with scrolls and foliage in low relief about the rear ramrod-pipe and with rococo ornament about the tang, raised cheek-piece, silver mounts comprising scrolling side-plate decorated with foliage, butt-plate with acanthus tang finial, matching trigger-guard, three ramrod-pipes and oval escutcheon engraved with the crowned rampant Brunswick lion (sling swivels missing), horn fore-end cap and brass-tipped wooden ramrod 95cm; 37 1/2in barrel Provenance Schloss Marienburg, Pattensen, North Germany Literature Dr. J. Fastenau, Die Waffensammlung, 1910, no. 209. The Brunswick court enjoyed hunting and the numerous elaborate variations that were so popular from the 17th century in the German speaking lands. In 1723 Ludwig Rudolph, Duke of Brunswick and Lüneburg in Blankenbuirg and Wolfebüttel (1671-1735) held a Wasserjagd in front of Closter Michaelstein, near Blankenburg. Guns such as the present example, with a straight grooved bore, would have been employed for this. Friederich Ostermann is recorded circa 1694-1717 and worked mainly for the Danish Court. A large number of firearms by him are preserved in the Tøjhusmuseet and Rosenborg Castle, Copenhagen. His most celebrated work are the pair of pistols made for carousel riding for Christian V which have pommels thickly encrusted with semi-precious stones. See Hayward 1963, pp. 171. A number of firearms by leading Danish gunmakers are recorded in the gewehrkammer of the Dukes of Brunswick at this time. Part proceeds to benefit Westminster Abbey

He became free of the Gunmakers Company in 1666 and Master 1689, 1696 and 1700. He was contractor to Ordnance 1667-1701, the Royal African Company 1683-1701 and appointed Chief Gunmaker, Tower of London, 1689. Following his death in 1701 his wife, Mary, continued the business.
