A Cameroon Earthenware Pipe, the bowl modelled as an anthropomorphic figure, with wooden stem and mouthpiece, 42cm long; a Cameroon Clay Vessel, covered in an ochre pigment and modelled as a stylised man with globular body with small moulded hands, tall cylindrical neck with upturned head with open mouth, wearing brass earrings, 30cm high; a Berber, Morocco Clay Pot, of rounded cylindrical form, the waisted neck with drawn handle, painted with feathered bands and diapering in brown and red, 32cm high (3)
* Tennyson (Alfred, Lord, 1809-1892). A clay pipe formerly belonging to the poet Alfred Lord Tennyson, blind-stamped Dublin to bowl exterior and with an inscription in block capitals and black ink to front of bowl, "A. Tennyson`sPipe, Farringford, July 27 1883", used and sl. discoloured, 15 cm long, contained in contemp. plush-lined hinged black morocco pipe case with fastener, a little rubbed. Tennyson lived in Farringford from 1854 until 1889. The Tennyson Society have a number of similar pipes and one exactly the same, and the labelling is typical of what happened to Tennyson`spossessions. (1)
BRUCE NIGEL: (1895-1953) British Character Actor, famous for his portrayal of Dr. Watson alongside Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes in a number of films. Vintage signed and inscribed 8 x 10 photograph, the image being a reproduction of an artist`s caricature of Bruce standing in a three quarter length pose smoking a pipe. Signed in bold, dark blue fountain pen ink across a light area of the image and dated 1943 in his hand. Accompanied by an A.L.S., Nigel Bruce, one page, 8vo, Beverly Hills, California, 29th December 1943, to John Trevor, apologising for not having replied to his letter earlier, explaining `I had an operation on my leg 10 days ago & have only been allowed out just for the broadcast.` Very slight scuffing to one corner of the photograph, only affecting the white border, otherwise VG, 2
ROBINSON EDWARD G.: (1893-1973) American Actor, Academy Award winner. Vintage signed and inscribed 8 x 10 photograph of Robinson seated in a three quarter length pose holding a pipe in one hand. Boldly signed in dark fountain pen ink across a clear area of the background. Together with a T.L.S., Edward G. Robinson, one page, small 4to, n.p., 14th September 1942, to Clyfford Trevor, stating that he will be happy to send his son John a signed photograph under separate cover. VG, 2
