THE ROCK (1996) - VX Canister with "Pearls" - A VX canister with "pearls" from Michael Bay's The Rock. Rogue Marines led by Brigadier General Frank Hummel (Ed Harris) stole canisters of poisonous VX gas, which Dr. Stanley Goodspeed (Nicholas Cage) and John Mason (Sean Connery) later extracted from missiles to render them inoperable.A critical and box office sensation for director Bay, The Rock was the fourth-highest-grossing English-language film worldwide in 1996. It was nominated for an Academy Award® for Best Sound and was released as Spine #108 by the Criterion Collection, cementing it as a classic of modern American cinema. This burnished steel canister originated with a crew member. It is inset with 50 glass "pearls" mounted via plastic pipe in rows of 10. Each row leads to false copper and rubber-covered wiring affixed to the underside of the canister's cap. The pearls contain the remnants of green aloe vera gel (believed to be original from production) with copper-colored wire running down their sides. The rows are designed to pull out along with the cap. This canister has undergone partial sympathetic restoration, but three of the glass VX pearls, two on one strand and one on another strand, remain damaged with exposed sharp edges that should be handled carefully. Much of the gel exhibits leaking or evaporation from age, the wiring exhibits rusting and fraying, and the glass pearls remain in fragile condition. As a result, the lot should be handled gently. Percussion 8-bore fowling gun by H.C. Burt, Yarmouth, 42inch Damascus Spanish form barrel with false breech engraved with maker name, scroll engraved lock, figured chequered stock. Section 58(2) Antique /obsolete calibre, can be owned without a licence. Buyer must be over the age of 18 and photo ID will be required before the lot can be posted out. 146cm overall length. The gun is in reasonable condition and has the looks of a gun that has been recently held on licence and used. It is however sold as a Section 58(2) antique which does not require a licence. There are signs of refinishing work and wear. The bore is in fair order but it has a few scattered pitting spots. The barrel has been rebrowned, and the engraving has possibly been refreshed. There is a gap between the barrel and the false breech. The engraving seems to match up on both pieces and it is not thought to be a marriage between to separate guns. The gap can only be assumed to be a result of age, usage and changes in the wood stock. One ramrod pipe has been resoldered back into position, the ramrod is a replacement. The action cocks and releases with a strong spring, the lock has been reblued leaving some of the engraving fainter than it could be. The stock is free from splits or cracks, there are some dents and scratches. Some light sanding marks give away the fact that the stock has been refinished. Some screw heads show signs of being worked. The gun has a modern rubber butt plate to ease recoil.
