A Chinese koro and cover, 10.5 cm high, and a Chinese opium pipe, with a hardstone mouthpiece (2) Condition report Report by JB Koro and cover: General marks to lid, small crack to inside of lid. One small chip to inside rim. Main body in ok order, general marking, some impact damage to one foot (no loss) two black marks to underside. Two small chips to inside rim. The material the koro is made from is unclear. The opium pipe displays general wear and markings and rubbings to main body. Metal section has been repaired around the region where it joins with the wood. Mouth piece slightly discoloured Please see illustrations
Tom Browne, (1870-1910), five original late 19th Century pen and ink cartoons, four on card, `Take off your hat & put out your pipe`, `as I walked through the hall`, `The most wonderful exhibit`, `I`ll play you a match on even terms`, and one other, four signed `Tom B`, - Tom Browne was a popular English strip cartoonist, painter and illustrator of the late Victorian and Edwardian periods, his cartoons appeared in Punch and The Tatler, he also created the Johnnie Walker logo, (5)
An 1827 pattern Royal Naval officers’ sword, slightly curved, pipe backed blade 29”, by “Prosser, Maker to the King & Royal Family. London”, finely etched with Royal Arms and crowned fouled anchor in frosted panels, regulation half basket hilt, the guard incorporating crowned fouled anchor, lion’s head pommel and facetted backstrap, wirebound sharkskin grip, with knot (worn) in its black leather scabbard with gilt mounts and rings, the locket with maker’s name, as a blade, in panel. Very Good Condition, the blade retaining much original finish, the hilt and scabbard mounts approximately 75% gilding (small dark pitting patches to edges of blade). Plate 17
A fine German 90 bore percussion hunting rifle, by Gebr Rempt in Suhl, 47½” overall, octagonal barrel 31½” with recessed muzzle, chiselled breech, sliding adjustable rearsight and gold inlaid “Gebr.=Rempt in Suhl”, breech tang engraved, gold inlaid with deer, and with large adjustable aperture rearsight; lock and hammer chiselled with vine leaves, plate engraved with forest scene and gold inlaid with a stag; walnut halfstock with cheek rest and chequered wrist and with engraved steel mounts including large double scrolled trigger guard, bow gold inlaid with stag and containing double set triggers, large patch box decorated with vines and vignette of two gold inlaid deer amid rocky landscape, butt plate and fore-end cap; with single sling swivel in the butt and slender steel ramrod. Good Working Order and Clean Condition (lower ramrod pipe and sling swivel missing). Stockel lists Gebr Rempt working in Suhl from 1865 to 1940. Plate 56
A cased double barrelled 10 bore percussion sporting gun, by Pritchard, Birmingham, number 1089, 46” overall, professionally rebrowned damascus barrels 30” with brass poincon at breech (stamped “Warranted”?), top rib re-engraved “William Pritchard No 14 Bull Ring, Birmingham”; back action locks engraved with scrolls and “Pritchard”; walnut halfstock with chequered wrist, engraved German silver throat pipe, underside of the butt inlaid with a silver game dog, and with scroll engraved steel trigger guard and butt plate. Good Working Order and Condition; in its blue velvet lined fitted brass bound mahogany case, the lid with folding brass handle and inlaid with thin brass lined panel, containing a shaped embossed copper flask “Hunter and Dog” (Riling 927), and “T” shaped steel nipple key with pricker and compartments for spare nipples. Generally Clean Condition (some age splits to lid). Plate 75
A Berlin woolwork, of an old man in bed with other figures at his bedside, 60 x 68cm, another of a girl praying, 62 x 49cm, in a maple frame, and another of a gentleman lighting his pipe, 62 x 48.5cm, in a maple frame (3) CONDITION REPORT: Man with pipe damage to frame and faded. Edges of woolwork visible. Man in bed: Fading, frame damaged. Holes visible to centre top and bottom edge. Girl praying: holes to top and sides, edges visible, faded. None viewed out of frames.
An Aster gauge 1 live steam tender locomotive. A fine Southern Railway Schools Class 4-4-0 tender locomotive ‘Winchester’. RN E901. In lined malachite green livery with vacuum pipe, sprung buffers, smoke box hand rail, brass safety valves and controls to cab. Finely detailed overall. Basically GC has been run, hence some cleaning required. Contained in a custom made wooden carry case also complete with its original Aster box. See Front Cover
