Features a double point, panelled copper gilt crossguard with langets and bud terminals with toothed chevron border and six pointed star to centre contained within circular, reeded border to one side. Lined backstrap to ivory hilt, inset with twin gilt rosettes to front and back. Blade length, 31 inches, sword length 36 inches. Complete with black leather covered scabbard with long panelled locket and chape, bulbous middle bud and matching mount complete with suspension rings. He was the only President to serve two non-consecutive terms of office. Including some of his wife's jewellery (Frances Folsom), and silver. Acquired from two of the President's grand-daughters, Marion Frances (Daniel) nee Bosanquet, (1919-2016) and her sister Philippa Ruth (Foot) nee Bosanquet, by bequest and gift. Their mother Esther was the only child born at The White House to a serving American President..

Follower of Adriaen van Ostade (Dutch, 1610-1685) A Laughing peasant holding a pipe oil on oak panel 29.50 x 25.50cm (12 x 10in) Dendrology analysis has shown that the panel dates to the 18th Century. Oil on panel. The panel has been extended at the left and bottom edges which seems to be the original construction. There is some losses and cracking along the panel joins. Otherwise the paint layer is stable. There are numerous areas of retouching across the panel, some areas have become slightly lighter and mismatched to the original. The varnish is clear and matte.
