Early 19th Century English Prattware coiled pipe in blue and ochre, the bowl modelled with two figures in trousers. Mouthpiece and bowl are detached from the body, and a part of the body is lacking. The most idiosyncratic of all Pratt ware objects are the under-glaze coloured pipes that often have stems of great length, twisted and bent and coiled into extraordinary shapes. These pipes were made from white clay mixed with a high proportion of plastic ball clay, which was even softer than that used for throwing. It did not contain flint, normally used for the quality of hardness of clay bodies. The hollow pipe stem was formed in a small version of a wad box. At the bottom of the cylinder was a metal core that made the hollow stem. The desired length of stem was extruded, by screwing down the pressure plate and forcing the soft clay through the hole in the base of the box. If very long lengths of pipe were wanted, extra clay could be added to the cylinder. . Restoration to mouthpiece and bowl.
