1793 AD. A mixed group of battlefield items recovered from the site of the battle of Lauterbourg (1793 AD) comprising: an iron horse-shoe; a bronze pipe-bowl; an iron round-section peg with shoe-shaped head; a discoid iron plaque; an iron cannonball (8cm diameter); a large iron cannonball (10cm diameter); a bronze officer's order seal with initials 'ML' over a 'liberty cap' and five stars within a wreath (for the 5th year of the Republic), supplied with a wax impression; an iron plate with hooked strap; four French coins including Louis XVI (12 deniers), two of the First Republic (un decime and a year 5, Strasbourg, 5 centimes) and an illegible silver issue; a wooden-handled cleaver with iron blade and fittings. 7.2 kg total, cleaver: 33cm (13"). [13, No Reserve] Mainly fine condition. Property of a Hampshire collector; collected by the vendor's father in the 1930s. On 13 August 13, 1793, a battle of the War of the First Coalition took place in the forested area by the town of Lauterbourg (Luterburi) on the present Franco-German border. The present group of items were recovered from the site of this battle. The purpose of the farrier's cleaver may have been to remove a hoof from the body of a fallen horse in order to secure a replacement.

A 19th century polychrome painted Gothic capitol, probably an organ pipe cover with pierced trefoil decoration and scrolling arched uprights, height 142cm. CONDITION REPORT: Overall in good condition. One face appears to have been cut flat. Top finials missing. Minor splits on a couple of the panels. See additional images.
A 38 bore percussion travelling pistol, c 1840, 8½” overall, sighted heavy octagonal barrel 4¼” with platinum line at breech, the flat stepped lock of flintlock form, with safety bolt and traces of name “J. Evans” in script, the walnut fullstock having rounded chequered butt with vacant escutcheon, engraved steel trigger guard, and throat pipe. GWO & generally GC (slightly worn, the butt has been fractured and repaired, hammer and ramrod replaced).
A 19th century American Indian tomahawk pipe, iron trade blade 2½”, scalloped along the upper and lower edges, plain socket and octagonal section peen which forms the pipe bowl, shaped darkwood haft with small “mouthpiece” end, lightly “feather” carved and set with pattern of rounded brass studs, 23” overall. An early Victorian 1821 pattern heavy cavalry officer’s sword, curved, pipe backed blade 36" , double edged at point end, etched on both sides with crowned VR cypher and wreath in frosted panels, steel hilt with pierced scroll pattern guard, into forward sloping stepped pommel, plain backstrap, wirebound fishskin grip, in its steel scabbard with 2 rings. Very Good condition, the blade retaining much original polish, dark patina to hilt and scabbard (the scabbard lightly pitted). Plate 38 £400-500
A 10 bore military pattern percussion trade pistol, 15½” overall, barrel 9” with B’ham proofs, the 1842 pattern musket lock stamped with crown over “Tower”, the walnut fullstock with regulation pattern brass mounts including 1796 type throat pipe and steel ramrod. WO & GC (action requires slight attention, slight pitting to lock, nipple missing).
