East India Company Baker pattern musket, 39 inch .750 barrel marked with Indian arsenal stamps, lock and barrel with the C date code indicating manufacture in 1839, the last year of production, maker’s marking POTTS on the underside of the butt (Thomas Potts, setter-up of East India Company arms 1827-1842)This was the common musket of the armies of the East India Company, manufactured from 1819-1839. It as also issued to some British regiments serving in India. Referred to as the Baker Pattern by D. Harding as Ezekiel Baker was instrumental in the simplified design and various improved features. Ref: D Harding, Small Arms of the East India Company Vol2 pp 64-70 Section 58 (2) antique / obsolete calibre, can be owned without a licence. Buyer must be over the age of 18.140cm long Condition report: The gun has a nice pleasing patina generally. Action works correctly. The metalwork has light overall pitting. Flintlock .650 carbine, (EXTRA IMAGES ADDED) with 33 inch barrel, (possibly a Grenadier 1756 pattern carbine with reduced barrel length) crown GR Tower stamped lock, brass furniture with wrist escutcheon, hand rail carved stock with slight well at the second ramrod pipe, horn capped forend.Section 58 (2) antique / obsolete calibre, can be owned without a licence.117cm long Condition report: The gun has a tight action with good mainspring. The metalwork has some light overall pitting and corrosion spots. There is a hole in the trigger guard presumably for a sling loop which is now missing. The stock has had some splits repaired forward of the lock plate. These repairs have come unstuck and require attention. The woodwork around the lock plate has some losses, there is a chip to the wood where it meets the barrel on the reverse side of the lock and there is a chip to the toe of the butt. The forend has a horn endcap which I do not think is original. The forend of the gun has a different patina to the butt stock probably as a result of the previous repair. There is a short hairline crack which seems stable to the trigger guard emanating from the trigger guard retaining screw hole.
Rare East India Company Pattern A percussion musket, 39 inch barrel fitted with block sight, unit marked butt plate and barrel marking for Muttra 122, the forend with Indian arsenal spliced section, alteration to accept the pattern F bayonet.Pattern A muskets were not converted from flintlock but set up as percussion arms using parts originally intended for flintlocks with the percussion bolster brazed onto the barrel, Only 5,000 were made during 1840. Ref. D. Harding, Small Arms of the East India Company Vol.2 pp 98-103 and p423 for information on this musket and the Indian arsenal alteration for pattern F bayonets. Section 58 (2) antique / obsolete calibre, can be owned without a licence. Buyer must be over the age of 18.139cm long Condition report: The gun has seen substantial use but has a nice general patina. The action works correctly, the nipple has been replaced, the bun nut for the hammer has lost a section. The metalwork has some wear generally and overall pitting. The stock has a crack that runs from the breech area underneath the side plate where it terminates. There are some chips to the woodwork in the areas it meets the metal parts as well as chips from the removal of the barrel pins. The butt has been slammed down so much that it has worn the top of the brass butt plate and its screw away, there is a very short crack in this area. The ramrod is a period Indian example. The lower ramrod pipe has significant wear but is still solid.
