Lot 188

Map of an Exploring Expedition to the Rocky Mountains in the Year 1842 and to Oregon & North California in the Years 1843-44 This is the large edition of the influential map that details John Charles Fremont`s epic exploration of the American West. Fremont and his traveling companion and topographer, George Carl Preuss, launched the expedition from the frontier settlement of Westport at the juncture of the Kansas and Missouri Rivers. There Fremont first met Kit Carson who signed on as guide to the expedition. Traveling across the Rocky Mountains at South Pass to the Columbia River in Oregon Territory, they then continued south along the Sierra Nevada nearly to the ""Pueblo del los Angeles"", northeast to Lake Utah and finally east to the Arkansas River. Fremont`s map and report had a profound influence on emigration to the Far West as his westward route eventually became the Oregon Trail. Wheat, who called this ""an important step forward from the earlier western maps"" devoted seven text pages to its description. The map was drawn by Charles Preuss ""whose skill in sketching topography...has probably never been surpassed in this country."" There is much to study and appreciate in this rare map, but we return to Wheat for this short praise: ""To Fremont and his magnificence map of his Second Expedition all praise. This is an altogether memorable document in the cartographic history of the West, and for it alone Fremont would deserve to be remembered in history."" Issued folding with light toning, scattered foxing, and four unobtrusive tears (0.25"" to 1"") in a blank area just to the east of the Columbia river that have been closed on verso with archival tape. 30.5"" W x 51"" H Fremont/Preuss, 1845

This is a live breast cast made from plaster of paris of Sally Turner. Sally says ""My name is Sally. I am a wife, Mum and grandma. Three years ago, aged 53, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. When I initially found the lump and had an ultrasound, I was told it was just a cyst. However the lump increased in size and a year later I was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. Unfortunately this meant I had missed out on a years worth of treatment. I then had a lumpectomy, chemotherapy, mastectomy, reconstruction and then 5 weeks of radiotherapy. There were a few problems during the mastectomy and the operation lasted 10 and a half hours. On top of that I had picked up an infection during the operation but didn`t know this for another 3 weeks when I became very ill and was readmitted to Broomfield Hospital. Another operation followed. This was probably the worst time for me. My poor husband was working full time shift work but travelled the round trip of 110 miles every day for nearly 2 weeks, bringing my children and friends to see me. It was a cold November day when I came home and I stood in our garden for about half an hour breathing in the cool fresh air. How grateful I was to be able to do that! It was a moment I will never forget and I realised just how lucky I was. I had a loving husband, dear family and very good friends. They had all kept me going and held my hand every step of the way. I am very grateful to the doctors and nurses who cared for me. I would urge anyone finds something abnormal in their breasts to go to their doctor as soon as possible and not ignore it."" Sally`s cast was painted by her daughter artist Rebecca Yarnton `This being the cast of my Mum, who has survived breast cancer, the task of decorating it has been a very special experience for me. I have been making art on canvases with string for some time, and decided to use that technique to decorate her cast. I wanted to give the effect of simplicity, yet retain an overall feeling of elegance, and I felt that painting the cast white helps to create that`. The approximate size of this cast is 15 inches x 8 inches. To post this item to you (1st class Special Delivery) a charge of £20 will need to added to this item. This ia a live breast cast made from plaster of paris of Melanie McGuinness. Melanie says, ""It took a while to warm to the idea of allowing the general public to view my breasts, after all exposure of breasts usual follows the protocol of page 3 models and something to be proud of. Being proud of my breasts couldn`t be further from my thoughts, although 5 years on from my mastectomy the results of my surgery are still very raw and only remind me of the horror that I endured fighting this horrible disease. So the decision was made and the appointment for the casting arrived. Being made to feel very special by Keri was the first step and in a very calm and private environment I allowed the first stranger to view my breasts. There was no shock expression or gasp of disbelief just caring admiration. So then the wait......apprehension turned to excitement as my phoned bleeped to let me know the images had been sent. I was so pleased with the results, the artist has done me proud and I think they look really cute (never would that word be used in the past). I would like to say a massive thank you to all involved for allowing/convincing me to take this project on and supported me throughout. I pray each day that exposure, fund raising and support ends this evil disease from affecting so many people. Melanie`s cast was painted by artist Jane Bryant. ""It was a privilege to have the opportunity to take part in this project. In my work I am interested in repetition, form, and the process of drawing. The idea for Melanie`s cast was to allow the form to guide the mark-making, and I wanted to achieve a sense of peace and tranquility. For further information about my work, please email: js.bryant@btinternet.com The approximate size of this cast is 15 inches x 8 inches.
