A GOOD IVORY NETSUKE OF A STREET VENDORUnsigned Japan, c. 1790, Edo period (1615-1868)Published: Sydney L. Moss (2010) They are all fire and every one doth shine. The Elly Nordskog Collection of Japanese Inro, Pipecases and Netsuke, London, pp. 408-409, no. 143.Superbly carved in a spirited and animated manner that is uncommon for the sankaku-type netsuke, possessing a good depth and plasticity, depicting a merchant or peddler turning in mid-step as he walks, his left hand obscured by his loose-fitting robe with neatly incised folds, holding a bunch of dried fruits with his right, carrying a straw bundle with a flowering prunus branch attached over his shoulder, his finely rendered face with a cheerful expression marked by a wide smile and upturned eyes, one himotoshi to the back, the other ingeniously carved through the robe beside the man's crossed legs.HEIGHT 7.1 cmCondition: Very good condition with minor surface wear, traces of use, expected age cracks. Fine, cream-colored patina to the back.Provenance: Ex-collection Elinor “Elly” Nordskog (1919-2013).This charming depiction, full of action and character, is one which derives from a fairly prolific and so far anonymous artist – or more likely workshop – in the late eighteenth century. The milky-white ivory and the concern with surface and line indicate they were based in or close to Osaka, and their figures are of medium rather than outsize scale and always smile. Such depictions on porcelain could relate to a specific scene in a novel or play, but it is difficult to attribute. The image on the present lot shows a woman carrying a boy on her back, her leg is high up, indicating she running or moving quickly, while looking back. It could therefore, relate to woodblock illustrations of the Lienu zhuan ('Biographies of Exemplary Women') and the story of 'The Virtuous Aunt'. The story recounts that when troops from the state of Qi entered Lu, they came upon a rural woman walking in the countryside, carrying her own son and leading her husband's elder brother's son by the hand. Fearing that she did not have the strength to rescue both children from the invaders, she flung her own son down, picked up her nephew and fled. Her son was captured by the Qi troops, and when they eventually reached her as well, the soldiers asked her why she had made the choice she did. She responded that her relationship to her son is private love, but her nephew is 'public duty':If I had turned my back on public duty and pursued private love, abandoning my brother's child to save my own child, even if by some good fortune I had escaped, still the Lord of Lu would not succour me, officials would not nourish me, and ordinary countrymen would have nothing to do with me. If I were to do this, then my body would nowhere be at ease, and my tired feet would have nowhere to step. Although it is painful to lose my son, what is the meaning of righteousness? Although I can bear to abandon my son and practice righteousness, I cannot bear to live in the state of Lu without righteousness. See Children in Chinese Art, Honolulu, 2002, p.99. The virtuous Aunt thus became a paragon of Confucian virtue for her dedication to public virtue over private love. In the early Kangxi period, when this dish was made, many would still remember the chaos and destruction from the Manchu invasion in 1644, and stories of invading soldiers and retreating women and children and issues of public service over private interests, would have tugged at the hearts of those living in the 17th and early 18th centuries. Stylistically, depictions of women on porcelain from this period appear to have been strongly influenced by Chen Hongshou (1598-1652). Chen painted his figures with relatively large heads with high chignon and thin graceful bodies. Chen was also extremely active within the printing industry, hence his designs often came to the attention of craftsmen who could copy them. See for example, the painting 'Flowers in His Hair' by Chen Hongshou, illustrated in Three Thousand Years of Chinese Painting, New Haven and London, 1997, p.243.For a related example of a blue and white dish with a lady, Kangxi, see M.Butler, M.Medley and S.Little, Seventeenth-Century Chinese Porcelain from the Butler Family Collection, Alexandria, 1990, p.167, no.113; another related blue and white dish with a lady, Kangxi six-character mark and of the period, in the Palace Museum, Beijing, is illustrated in Qing Shunzhi Kangxi Chao Qinghuaci, Beijing, 2005, p.123, no.61. See also a related blue and white dish, Kangxi, illustrated by H.Garner, Oriental Blue and White, London, 1970, p.46, pl.D.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Gillot & Co., a rare Art Deco gem-set and diamond brooch, circa 1920, the bar brooch channel-set with a line of rectangular step-cut emeralds, sapphires and diamonds, terminating in calibré-cut rubies, within an open work frame of stylised lotus motifs in the Egyptian taste, set with calibré-cut emeralds, rubies and sapphires, to an outer border of single-cut diamonds, mounted in platinum, length 7.8cm, pin signed Gillot & Co. Inc. Paul Gillot (circa 1877-1949) was an important creative driving force in American jewellery at the start of the 20th century. In his native France he trained as a draughtsman, and his 1898 entry into a jewellery design competition caught the attention of jeweller and jewellery historian/critic Henri Vever, who praised the young designer in print for his talent. In 1902, he emigrated to New York and found employment at one of the most creative and prominent jewellers in America, Marcus & Co, whose doorman at the time would become an important American jeweller in his own right - Raymond Yard. Prized for his knowledge of pioneering Art Nouveau techniques such as plique-à-jour enamel, Gillot was an indispensable asset to these influential jewellers, and remained at Marcus & Co. for twelve years. Among his key commissions during this time was a gold laurel wreath crown, presented to the famed actress Sara Bernhardt when she performed in New York in 1913, now housed in the MFA Boston. Shortly afterwards, Gillot left Marcus & Co. to enlist in the French army in the First World War, but injury and sickness cut his service short. When Gillot returned to New York and resumed trading in 1916, now under his own name, Bernhardt, whose renowned jewellery collection contained superbly imaginative jewels designed by René Lalique and Alphonse Mucha, became one his key clients, to the extent that he was later described as having designed 'the major portion of Sarah Bernhardts's jewellery' by the Yonkers Statesman in 1927. Gillot is also said to have assembled an extraordinary collection of coloured diamonds, which briefly earned him the nickname 'the King of Diamonds', (a moniker later and more enduringly given to Harry Winston), and while his signed jewels are rare and seldom seen, when they do appear they are often set with stones of superb quality, reflecting his elite clientele and connoisseur's eye. The present brooch is no exception, set with a beautifully matched selection of step-cut sapphires, rubies, emeralds and diamonds, arranged in a stylish Art Deco bar brooch designed with subtle accents of the fashionable Ancient Egyptian revival style, making it a perfect testament to the talent and elevated taste that this French jeweller contributed to American design at the start of the 20th century.
