ROYAL: A GEORGE IV SILVER-GILT BOWL, EDWARD FARRELL, LONDON, 1824 chased with panels containing the arms of James I and his emblems and the date 1610 below a Gothic inscription, all on matted or granulated grounds, spreading foot with stylised leaves 16cm diameter, 524gr (16oz) The inscription reads: Shew not thy valientnesse in wine; for wine hath destroyed many. Can a man take fire in his bosome, and his clothes not bee burned? can one goe upon hote coles, and his feet not bee burned? Provenance: H.R.H. Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany (1763-1827); Christie's, London, Duke of York sale, 19 March 1827, lots 79-82; unknown; Sotheby's, London, 17 October 1975, lot 452 This bowl is one from a set of thirty-four such vessels belonging George IV's brother, Prince Frederick the Duke of York, each with a differing inscription. The Duke amassed an enormous collection of plate, much of it through the auspices of the maverick retailer, Kensington Lewis (c.1790-1854). Although Prince Frederick took his official duties seriously, his extravagant lifestyle and gambling debts forced his executors to take the rare step of holding the exceptional Royal sale at Christie's in 1827. The Prince's collection included a number of Farrell's extraordinary and somewhat eccentric designs. Kensington Lewis had encouraged Farrell to gain inspiration from early silver, leading the chaser and silversmith to become one of the earliest proponents of historicist silver. These particular bowls were based upon a rare 17th century type of English fruitwood drinking bowl: for a similar bowl, dated 1610, see O. Evan-Thomas, Domestic Utensils of Wood, London 1932, plate 14. Literature: A. Phillips and J. Sloane, Exhibition catalogue, Antiquity Revisited: English and French Silver-Gilt from the Collection of Audrey Love, London, 1997.

The vineyards that produce Flaccianello della Pieve Fontodi are located in the so-called Conca d’Oro (“Golden Valley”) - at Panzano in Chianti, in the heart of the Chianti Classico Region – as one can gather from the name, the valley offers unique qualities of both soil and exposure and is unanimously considered one of the finest terroirs for the cultivation of sangiovese. Two of the vintages offered are extraordinary - 1985 and 1988 - but the others are no less great, just a step below. (Tot. 10 bts) € 350

*A circa 1891 Trigwell & Co. of London, 'Regent' 52-inch Ordinary. Originally a pneumatic-tyred bicycle, but now with solid tyring, it possesses (probably) its original deep-set 1-inch hollow crescent rim with a hole (now with a rubber plug) for the inflation valve, featuring direct spoking into an original hub, the adjustable main bearings are intact, and the 7-inch cracks possess original nickel-plating with caps at the spindle ends. Trigwell's 1886 patent ball bearing head and dust cover are fitted, as are two mud scrapers fitted to either side of the hollow forks. The oval backbone extends down to gentle flowing rear forks. The rear wheel does not have a pneumatic rim, so may be a replacement. The writer is of the opinion that this bicycle was intended for competition work for the following reasons: a rear step was apparently not fitted, the spoon brake mechanism, while of some age, could well be a later addition, the deep-drop 24-inch handlebars with palm grips imply competition and the saddle mount may well be later, which may imply that, originally, a lightweight frame saddle was fitted. However, the vendor has manufactured a rear step in the HHC style, which is perfectly serviceable. This bicycle has been used and enjoyed at many events in the hands of the vendor (1)
Churchill (Winston Spencer, 1874-1965). The Second World War, 6 volumes written out in manuscript longhand into 2 large day books and a ledger, by an unidentified hand, circa 1950s, a right-sloping neat hand in mostly blue or black fountain pen inks with occasional red highlights, etc., seemingly an unabridged and full transcription (except some quoted sources typed up on separate loose sheets in a folder), written on both sides of approximately 800 leaves of 3 ledgers/day books, volumes 1 and 2 of the magnum opus written into one day book, volume 3 into a ledger (damp-frayed at lower margins), volumes 4-6 written into a second day book matching the first (with printed columns for rooms, wines, accounts, etc.), this final volume following straight on with full-length transcriptions of 4 other of Churchill's works in the same hand, 'My Early Life', 'Thoughts and Adventures', 'Great Contemporaries' and 'Step by Step', approximately 150 blank leaves at rear of volume 3, contemporary quarter leather, some soiling and wear, volumes 1 & 3 with printed stationer's labels of Arthur Wrigley, Leeds, at front, large 4to (49 x 41cm), volume 2 folio (47 x 30cm), together with a folder of related typed leaves supplying many of the quoted sources for which coded references are left in the manuscript One of the most bizarre and unique Churchill items ever to come up for auction. With shades of Jorge Luis Borges' story 'Pierre Menard, Author of the Quixote', this three-volume manuscript raises unanswerable questions of authorship and appropriation. The best explanation is to misappropriate a quote from Churchill himself, and to describe this gargantuan and eccentric project as a "riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma". The Second World War alone totals over 1.5 million words and what person would voluntarily, (or otherwise), attempt to rewrite all this verbatim in longhand defies all logic and explanation. The handwriting is not Churchill's, nor any of his known secretaries, according to the Churchill Archives, Cambridge. Besides which Churchill's modus operandi for writing was dictation to typists in the first instance, which was then hand corrected by Churchill, retyped and corrected once more. Even with the large team of researchers involved in the preparation of The Second World War there would have been no call for such a manuscript. The inclusion of full transcriptions of four further and earlier works by Churchill adds to the bafflement. The ledgers were acquired by the current owner from a dealer who had himself acquired them around 15 years ago from a large house clearance near York. There are two clues as to who the author may be, both possibly in the same hand as the manuscript itself: The name 'Philip H. [?]Richings' appears on the front free endpaper of the second day book, and a three-page manuscript poem ('An Ode to Sir Barnes [Wallis]'), included with the folder of typed quoted sources, is initialled 'P.H.R.' at the end. (3 ledgers & a folder)

A 1967 Volkswagen Beetle 1200, registration number NDV 34F, chassis number 117732801, engine number DR 1444, blue. Believed 51,500 miles from new, this restored Beetle was christened by the vendor's daughter BeBe having been in same family ownership from new, mother and daughter. In 1991 BeBe accompanied the vendor's step-daughter to Edinburgh, where it remained in garage storage before returning to the family home in Torquay in 2003, where upon a photographic restoration was carried out. A brief outline of works carried out includes a re-conditioned engine by Remtech (still needs running in), new silencer and tailpipes, new clutch, new wheel bearings, a fully rebuilt braking system, rebuilt suspension, re-spray, all new rubber seals, an interior re-trim with new carpets, seat covers and headlining, new tyres, stainless steel rear bumper, new lighting, plus numerous other components which costs approx. £6,000 plus labour. There is an accompanying history file with receipts, old MOTs, SORNs and sundry paperwork. BeBe is now only for sale because she is not getting the use she deserves having only covered a couple of hundred miles since the completion of the restoration.
