DU MAURIER DAPHNE: (1907-1989) British Author. T.L.S., Daphne du Maurier, two pages, 8vo, Kilmarth, Par, Cornwall, 14th October 1977, to Mr. Threadgold, stating that she would be happy to sign his copy of Gerald and continuing 'It was truly a labour of love - if you can call it labour - and I so remember asking him once, a few years before he died, why he did not write his autobiography; another stage personality had just done theirs. He replied “I can't be bothered, but if I did, I should take care to tell the truth about myself.†This stayed in my mind, and I tried to do as he said. I know some of his acting friends were shocked, and thought I had been too outspoken, a daughter about her father. But when I think of what people write today, it all seems very harmless!' She further adds 'I agree about Jamaica Inn. A very poor film indeed. All shot in a Hollywood studio, or it could have been an English one, I forget, it was pre-war, but they completely altered the story.' Together with the title page of Gerald - A Portrait, neatly removed from a Penguin edition of the book, signed and inscribed by Du Maurier and dated October 1977 in her hand. Also including a second T.L.S., Daphne du Maurier, two pages, 8vo, Kilmarth, Par, Cornwall, 4th July 1978, to Mr. Threadgold, stating 'I confess I have never heard that Clemence Dane, a very good writer, ever wrote a script for Jamaica Inn. Or that J. B. Priestley had anything to do with it either. But that Charles Laughton himself had the biggest say in it all! No, when a writer in those days, like myself, sold the film rights of a novel, that was it, and I wasn't consulted. Same went for Rebecca and other novels. I dare say had I held out for consultation it would have been different. But I never wanted to write a film script for my novels, as it would have entailed going to Hollywood and I would never have faced that!' Further with a printed 8vo theatre programme for a performance of Rebecca at the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, Guildford, Surrey, February - March 1977, signed and inscribed to an inside page by Du Maurier and also signed by cast member Hayley Mills, and also including a signed colour 5 x 3.5 photograph of Du Maurier seated on an outdoor step with two small dogs at her side. Signed in blue ink to a clear area at the head of the image and dated 1987 in her hand. VG to EX, 5
