An 18th Century 8 day longcase clock by Step Aselin, London, the 30.5cms square brass dial with cherub and crown spandrels, silvered chapter ring, subsidiary seconds dial and date aperture, in oak case with mahogany crossbanding, the hood with swans neck pediment, fluted pillars to the dial door, shaped full length trunk door flanked by fluted pilasters and on panelled plinth base, 203cms high

WATSON, serial no. 13, 30in. black powder only 'PATENT CONCENTRIC' damascus barrels, rib engraved 'T.W. WATSON. 4 PALL MALL. LONDON' (loose), 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. 1/2 and 3/4 choke, Tranter patent action, patent no. 1881 of 1882 with automatic triple bolting safety, (acting on tumblers, sears and triggers), triggerplate action, fine border and scroll engraving, 14 1/2in. stock including 1/2in. rubber recoil pad, Anson push-rod fore-end release catch, weight 6lbs. 5oz. Footnote: Though patented by William Tranter, patent 1881 was offered for sale as 'The Carlton' by his son-in-law T.W. Watson. It was marketed as a huge step forward in gun making for its ease of opening and closing (and wear reduction) and with it's new 'Jar Check' for the new level of safety offered for a hammerless gun. Watson also claimed that the new 'patent concentric' barrels 'give better shooting than any hitherto attained' and were 'specially bored to shoot with ordinary paper cases and Kynoch's perfect metallic cases'
