It probably dates from the second third of the century.' Not having been exhibited before the Royal Academy exhibition in 1976, it is a testament to the importance of this still life that the The Golden Age of Spanish Painting comprised such masterpieces as Juan Sánchez Cotán's Still life with vegetables hanging above a cardoon and lemons on a stone ledge, lent by the Várez-Fisa Collection, Madrid; Francisco Zurbarán's Still of ceramic and metal objects on a wooden ledge lent by the Museo del Prado; and Antonio Pereda's The Knight's Dream, lent by the Real Academia de San Fernando, Madrid; not to mention a number of the Museo del Prado's best known masterpieces by El Greco, Velásquez, Zurbarán and Ribera. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

A c1885 Coventry Machinists Co. 'Club' Ordinary Bicycle. A Coventry-built 48-inch machine with a very indistinct, acid etched script on the saddle support, the only clear wording is Coventry. The frame is numbered 38037 / 48 and sports 26-inch hooped handlebars, fixed mounting step, leg guard, rebuilt but later leather saddle, original spoking to both wheels with what appear to be plain main bearings, slotted cranks and pedals. The brake lever is missing.
A Hillman Herbert & Cooper 50-inch Ordinary Bicycle. Retailed by Fred King of Wimborne, the 'Agent and Maker' inscription appears on the saddle spring. A classic period machine dating from the mid-1880s, it comprises patented adjustable main bearings, a fixed mounting step, 25-inch handlebars with palm grips, 6-inch stotted cranks and pedals. The spoon brake lever has been replaced. Probably re-spoked some time ago and, with tidying, a rideable machine
A c1890 Humber & Co. (?) Pneumatic-Tyred Track Ordinary. A very rare lightweight track bicycle with a 53-inch tangent spoked wheel with a ½-inch hub with petit bell-cupped ends. The circular section backbone, steering head and forks are of the lightest construction, and retain signs of original black enamel and the remains of a gilt manufacturer's transfer just below the stiff blade saddle support. The saddle is a Huntington model and, although incorrect for the machine, is serviceable for demonstration rides. The delightful scorching handlebars have an 11-inch drop and turned wooden grips are fitted, as is an adjustable mounting step. Correctly, no brake is fitted.
An Overman Wheel Co., 'Victor Flyer' Bicycle. Dating circa 1894, and originally a cushion-tyred bicycle, but now fitted with 28 x 1¾-inch pneumatics.
