c.1982 Kawasaki KR250 Grand Prix Racing MotorcycleFrame no. 601F7818Engine no. TE 601 101•Engine professionally refurbished•Last used at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2014Few machines in Grand Prix racing's modern era have enjoyed such a lengthy period of dominance as the Kawasaki 'tandem twins' that ruled the 250 and 350 classes from 1978 to 1982, winning 72 GPs and securing eight World Championships for the Japanese manufacturer. A radical design, the KR250/350 employed the rotary inlet valves that had been a feature of previous Kawasaki two-strokes, but avoided the associated disadvantage of excess width (when applied to a conventional parallel twin) by using two inline cylinders with separate geared-together crankshafts. As well as the advantage of asymmetrical inlet timing, the use of direct crankcase induction via rotary disc valves enabled an extra transfer port to be accommodated in the cylinder where the inlet port would have been, while the tandem arrangement also left more room for the side transfer ports. After an inauspicious debut season in 1975, the KR250 took a Grand Prix sabbatical in 1976, returning to the fray in '77 in heavily revised form with altered crankshaft phasing and mono-shock rear suspension. Mick Grant scored the KR's debut GP victory at Assen that year and followed up with a win in Sweden, but it was not until Kork Ballington's arrival the following year that the KR posed a serious championship threat. The South African went on to secure both the 250 and 350 World Championships in 1978 and '79, while German Anton Mang took the 250 World Championship in 1980 and '81 and the 350 title in 1981 and '82. This particular KR250 is believed to have been campaigned by the French rider Jean-François Baldé, although, unfortunately, there is no firm documentary evidence to support this. Further research may yet prove fruitful but bidders should satisfy themselves as to the authenticity. Baldé had begun his Grand Prix career in 1973 in the 500cc class. He scored his first victory (riding a KR250 Kawasaki) in 1981 at the Argentine Grand Prix and went on to finish 2nd in the 250cc World Championship that year, his best-ever result. Consistency was the key to Baldé's success in 1981, the Frenchman scoring points in 10 out of the 12 rounds and finishing on the podium six times. His KR250 was outpaced in 1982 but on the KR350 he secured three World Championship victories, finishing 3rd overall at the season's end. He switched to Yamahas in 1983 and retired at the end of the 1989 GP season. In a 16-year career in Grands Prix, Baldé started over 200 races and finished on the podium's top step five times. Sadly, there were to be no points-scoring finishes in 1989.An excellent example, the Kawasaki was last used at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in June 2014, although, sadly, the vendor can no longer remember who rode it. Re-commissioning will be required before further use. Copy KR250/350 service manuals are included in the sale. With the 250cc class now defunct at World Championship level, these purpose-built Grand Prix racers are becoming increasingly collectible and this KR250 represents a wonderful opportunity to acquire an example believed raced by one of France's foremost Grand Prix stars of the 1970s and 1980s.Offered without keyFootnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to biddingFor further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Taxidermy: A Cased Reproduction Yellow Kākāpō (Strigops habroptilus), modern, a superbly composed reproduction of a very rare and unusual Yellow Kākāpō, a full mount adult perched atop a small tree stump, amidst a natural setting of ferns, grasses and dry fauna, set above painted soil covered groundwork beneath, enclosed within a large five-glass wooden framed table display case, 46cm by 36cm by 57.5cm, The original specimen bird became part of the important nineteenth-century New Zealand ornithologist Walter Lawry Buller's collection, the Kākāpō is one of the rarest birds in the World, with only 201 living specimens known as of 2021, a Yellow Kākāpō is known to have occurred only once, captured near Cromarty, Fiordland of New Zealand in 1898 and purchased for Buller's son, who considered it "the most beautiful thing in the bird line that i have ever seen", this example was created using various donor specimens including Common Buzzard tail feathers. With Cites Article 10 (non transferable) licence no. 307908/03 - Buzzard Tail Feathers used.In 1871, 310 bird specimens were purchased by the Colonial Museum, Wellington, from the important nineteenth-century New Zealand ornithologist Walter Lawry Buller. This was the first large and representative collection of New Zealand birds obtained by the national museum, and it originally included type specimens of 11 species and 23 specimens of birds that are now extinct. Most of this collection (77%) was lost or destroyed in the nineteenth century, and today only 70 of the specimens have been located, with none having the locality and date of collection on the original label. Professional jealousy and a desire to conceal his sources may have been one reason for Buller’s failure to label his specimens at the start of his career, although laxity in recording specimen data was prevalent in New Zealand at the time. Subsequently, the museum was unable to care for these specimens properly, mainly owing to inadequate provision by the government for the museum and its collections. This contrasts with the professional care given to Buller’s later collections of New Zealand birds by Rothschild’s private museum in England, the American Museum of Natural History and the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. The latter two museums each have over 500 New Zealand bird specimens from Walter Buller, and these collections are well documented and still largely intact. Together they provide a precious record of the decline of most New Zealand endemic bird species during the late nineteenth century, which resulted from the introduction of mammalian predators. In this paper, Buller’s collections are used to document the decline and extinction of endemic New Zealand birds. Analysis of the ‘Second’ and ‘Third’ Buller collections showed a decline in the proportion of juveniles of extinct and threatened birds, which may indicate that predation of nests and young, rather than of adults, was a key step in the demise of many New Zealand mainland species. Buller’s assertion that he built up three separate collections of New Zealand birds is shown to be incorrect. Each of these three ‘collections’ was selected from Buller’s own collection, which was not fully disposed of until his death. The number of specimens collected was relatively small, and no evidence was found of Buller’s personal collecting, or collecting on his behalf, significantly impacting on any New Zealand bird species. Nor did Buller profit greatly from the sales of his bird collections.

The scarce Shipwrecked Fishermen and Mariners Royal Benevolent Society Medal in gold awarded to Captain Edward Salmund, Merchant Navy Shipwrecked Fishermen and Mariners Royal Benevolent Society, 1st type, gold (Edward Salmund Esq, 1855) straight bar suspension, slight edge bruising, good very fine, scarce £2,400-£2,800 --- Provenance: Dawson Collection; ref. Spink Exhibition 1985, No. 89; Fevyer Collection, Dix Noonan Webb, September 2008. The hired transport Charlotte had left Queenstown, bound for Calcutta, carrying five officers and 163 men of the 27th Regiment; 14 women; 26 children and a crew of 24. On 19 September 1854 she put in to Port Elizabeth, South Africa, for water. At 5 p.m. on the following day she parted both her anchors in Algoa Bay, and in an attempt to beat out, ran ashore on a dangerous reef of rocks nearby. The Society’s report records: ‘Eventually, and after every attempt to re-establish a communication with the Charlotte had failed, it was resolved to strive to reach her with the Life Boat, for which purpose she had to be launched some distance higher up the bay, and then to pull down between heavy rollers or breakers, until opposite the stranded ship, and in the narrow channel between the vessel and the rocks. The seamen generally refused to embark on so dangerous an enterprise, until Capt. Edward Henry Salmond, formerly a master mariner, and now a merchant at the bay, and three others guaranteed them the sum of £100. At length when the crew was obtained, another difficulty arose, the steersman, a man of courage and decision, refused to go off without Capt. Salmond accompanied them, and the latter gentlemen, not to mar so noble a design, immediately consented. It would be difficult to describe the intense anxiety which ensued, when the Life Boat, in the depth of night, manned by its daring crew, shot out amidst the breakers... and after threading the dangerous path amidst the rollers, pulled alongside the Charlotte. No effort having been made to prepare a line on the fore-part of the ship, the Life Boat was compelled, after pulling three times alongside, to drift to the stern of the ship where a line was being prepared by the Captain. In this last desperate attempt the boat filled, and was driven into the breakers, dashed on the reef of rocks and finally stove, the crew, including Captain Salmond being washed overboard, and narrowly escaped with their lives, in spite of assistance rendered by people who lined the shore. For the next hour or two, faint hopes were entertained that the ship might hold together until daylight and the fall of the tide. Meanwhile, the surf at the approach of high water increased in violence, and symptoms of breaking up became more painfully evident, while the groans and shouts for that help which it was impossible to render, were doubled in intensity... At about 2 a.m. one heavy sea swept over her and rent her in twain... Then arose the death shriek - the cry of agony - the wailing moan, high above the roar of the elements, which were heard distinctly... appalling sounds, which will ring in the ears of many an inhabitant of Port Elizabeth for years to come. Here and there a solitary individual, who had strength enough remaining to struggle against the current, was rescued from the jaws of death. Shortly after this occurance, the stern portion of the wreck was observed to be adrift, and nearing the shore... it was discovered that the poop deck was providentially crowded with people. This portion of the wreck being detached from the bottom and consequently drawing little water, came close in, and by means of spars, the survivors were enabled to step upon the rocks. The doors of several houses near the spot were generously thrown open to receive the numbed and shivering creatures, many of whom were without covering... ‘Captain Warren and Dr Kidd, the only officers on board... one hundred soldiers, five women, the Captain and his son, the first Officers, Steward, Cook, Butcher and two seamen, are all that have been saved out of 233 souls. All the children perished -[together with] eleven women and 63 soldiers. Many instances of personal daring and devotion may be cited... Capt. Salmond’s great coolness and courage on the present occasion, was but one of a long series of gallant efforts in which he has freely risked his life to save those of others. The Committee of the Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society unanimously voted Capt Samond their gold medal, as an expression of the high sense they entertained of his heroic and philanthropic exertions... The Committee likewise fully appreciated the conduct of the Life Boat’s crew, whose gallant services were however remunerated in the sum of £100.’ The above was one of 40 gold medals awarded by the Society.
