Chris Calle (American, B. 1961) "Bluelined Snapper" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Federated States of Micronesia Bluelined Snapper stamp issued August 4, 1995. Chris Calle's painting of the Bluelined Snapper is one of a set of four of the beautiful native fish of Micronesia. For centuries, Micronesians have thrived on a variety of food fish harvested from the waters surrounding their home islands. Today, commerical fishing companies have also tapped into the region's abundance of aquatic life. One of the most popular fish caught by such operations is the Skipjack Tuna. Particularly prevalent in the Pacific, these creatures are known to grow very rapidly. However, their life expectancy is only about four years. The Yellow-fin, another variety of tuna, has a reputation as one of the most tenacious game fish. Once it takes the bait, this fish fights the angler every step of the way. The Cave Grouper, on the other hand, is relatively secretive. It inhabits caves and crevices such as those found in Micronesia's steep outer reef slopes. Known to be a loner, the Cave Grouper typically travels singly or sometimes in small groups. A more gregarious resident of Pacific waters is the Bluelined Snapper. This fish occurs in large gatherings, particularly around prominent coral formations, isolated reefs and wrecks. Because this snapper feeds at night, it is among the most popular catches of sportsmen who fish during the evening hours. Image Size: 12.5 x 17 in. Overall Size: 14.5 x 22 in. Unframed. (B15150)
Chris Calle (American, B. 1961) "Gordon Cooper - Final Mercury Mission" Signed lower right. Mixed Media on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of The Gambia 25th Anniversary of the Moon Landing stamps issued August 16, 1994. Although originally scheduled to take off on May 14, 1963, Mercury 9 experienced radar malfunctions and an engine problem that delayed its launch until the following day. On May 15, Air Force Major General Gordon Cooper manned his spacecraft, which he called Faith 7. Its liftoff was as flawless as that of Wally Schirra's Sigma 7 just seven months earlier. Once Cooper was in orbit, he marveled at the detail he could make out from such a vantage point. He later recalled seeing the wake of a boat on the Nile as well as tendrils of smoke from villages in the Himalayas. Thrilling scenes such as those, combined with his floating, weightless arms, kept Cooper from getting the full seven and a half hours scheduled for his rest. Yet this was the least of his problems. During Faith 7's 19th orbit, an indicator light warned that "G" forces were building early. Two revolutions later, it was determined that the spacecraft's automatic stabilization and control system had lost all power. Later Cooper revealed, "I was privately pleased. I was glad for this chance to do the job myself and I was certain by now that I really had the thing nailed." His confident approach proved successful. Nearly 34 hours after its liftoff and following 22 orbits of Earth, Faith 7 safely landed four miles from its target, marking the final mission of the Mercury Project and taking man another step closer to the Moon. Image Size: 7.25 x 6 in. Overall Size: 12.75 x 11.25 in. Unframed. (B14799)

A MAGNIFICENT FAMILLE ROSE SGRAFFIATO LIME-GREEN BOTTLE VASE, QIANLONG MARK AND PROBABLY LATE IN THE PERIODExpert's note: Coated in an even and elegant lime-green glaze, this bottle vase is special for its restrained and uncluttered design of vibrantly colored floral sprays. While its color scheme, pattern, and use of the subtle sgraffiato ground are well-rooted in the exuberant porcelain style developed in the 18th century, the sparsely scattered sprays are an innovation and evidence of an attempt at reducing decorative elements to achieve a balanced and refined design, clearly a hallmark of the Qianlong era. While this author agrees with Christie's previous assertion that the vase was probably made during the late Qianlong period, we want to go one step further and state that it is almost certainly of the period, as clearly indicated by the exceptional enameling and great attention to the many details of the blossoms, with meticulously executed calyxes, stamens, and pollen.China, c. 1780-1795. The globular body supported on a spreading foot and rising to a tall cylindrical neck. Finely decorated around the body with blossoming peony, chrysanthemum, and prunus blooms with leafy stalks, reserved on a lime-green sgraffiato ground. The base and interior enameled turquoise. The recessed base with an iron-red six-character seal mark da Qing Qianlong nianzhi and probably late in the period.Provenance: Property of a University Museum, accession number 1960.45 (lacquered to base). Christie's New York, 21 September 2000, lot 411 (the mark erroneously described as “underglaze blue”). Collection of David and Diane Buck, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA, acquired from the above. Two old labels to base, one from Christie's, inscribed '9476' (sale number) and '411' (lot number), the other inscribed 'Chinese. 18 c.'
