A Green Stained Oak "Manxman" Upright Pianoforte, designed by Mackay Hugh Baillie Scott, manufactured by John Broadwood & Sons, London, completed on 29th October 1896, the hinged top above a pair of doors with strapwork copper hinges enclosing copper and iron candle sconces, on square front supports and panelled recessed base, bearing the serial number 88653, 4` 8 1/2" (143.5cm) by 2`1"(63.5cm) by 3`8" (111.7cm) high See illustration According to the Broadwood records, this piano was sold by them on 9th January 1897 for £50 to F H.French Esq of 27 Campden Hill Square, London SW. By May 1914 it belonged to Mrs Sykes (the vendor`s step great-grandmother) of 7 Percy Villas, Campden Hill, London, who returned it to Broadwoods for maintenance work, duly completed on the 30th of that month. The original case design work was carried out by Baillie Scott; modifications were effected by other designers including Charles Robert Ashbee.
A Japanese Carved Ivory Netsuke as Ashinaga and Tenaga, circa 1910-20, one carrying the other piggyback as they grab and step on a small octopus, 8cm long Ashinaga and Tenaga are two mythical Chinese fishermen who lived on the northern Chinese sea shore. Ashinaga has long legs, and Tenaga has long arms. In this netsuke Ashinaga`s long legs get entangled with the octopus, and they struggle to escape.

In 1962 he was convicted of the poisoning and attempted murder of his father, sister and a friend who all survived. His step mother had died of poisoning but no evidence could be produced because she had been cremated. He was sentenced to 15 years but released after only 9. After release he poisoned about 70 workmates by lacing their tea and two of them died. He was then given a life sentence in 1972 and died in prison in 1990. This lot was gifted by Young to a fellow prisoner.
