Rare Gandhi Photo Salt Protest photograph dated 1930 an exceptional photograph of Gandhi and his followers dated 12th August 1930 on verso with typed inscription. ‘Still fraught with serious consequences^ the non violence campaign of Mahatma Gandhi’s followers in India continues though Gandhi and other prominent leaders are in jail- the first move in this campaign was the salt gathering^ which was met with opposition by the British troops’. This photo shows Gandhi and his followers holding jars for the salt gathering. The first step in the series of epochal events in India. Gandhi set off with 78 disciples from his ashram in western India on a 350-kilometre trek to the coast. Twenty-five days later he stepped into a hollow^ scooped up a handful of mud and salt^ and announced to a throng: “With this salt I am shaking the foundations of the [British] empire.” Provenance – Pacific and Atlantic photos 1930. A very rare photograph – one of the first showing the campaign of non violence against the British.
John Dickinson on Indian Reform – India – John Dickinson^ Chairman of the Indian Reform Society fine autograph letter 200 signed dated December 3rd 1861^ 4pp 8vo to an unnamed correspondent saying that he had just returned to London and intended to attempt some political action again in the cause of Indian Reform. ‘.it cannot have escaped the penetration of a man of your remarkable intelligence that the last acts of Lord Canning in promising a permanent settlement to the North West Province & conceding the sale of waste lands on very favourable terms as well as the redemption of the land tax are measures calculated to give him a very great degree of popularity in England^ just at the close of his administration & to increase considerably the difficulty of those who object to other parts of his policy. in most cases English interference has been degrading^ oppressive^ & injurious^ but in some cases it has been necessary & really beneficial.in this dilemma all I can say is that I shall try to secure such a spirit in the Government as will compel its political agents to do justice to your rights & feelings and I think the time is favourable to an object of the sort. For the great increase of our Commerce with India in the last few years has attracted more English attention to the subject of our connection with the country & has generated a greater wish to conciliate the vast population who contribute so much to our national wealth & to remove all causes of their discontent & disaffection which threaten the performance of our profitable trade with them^ and there are no doubt higher & better motives for the wish to conciliate operating on a portion of my countrymen. I hope therefore that I shall now recommence my annual labours with a greater prospect of doing good & my first practical step will be an attempt to collect supporters for a deputation to the new Governor General Lord Elgin of which I must communicate the success or failure in future mails.’ Clearly from the context of this letter^ it was sent to a leading figure in India.

ITALY & FRANCE, Universities of. / FOX, Edward, Bp and GARDINER, Stephen Bp / [CRANMER? Thomas]. The determinations of the moste famous Universities of Italy and Fraunce - London: 1531. 8vo. pp. 309. A fine copy in nineteenth century morocco. Elaborately tooled in gilt on edges and spine. All edges gilt. STC 14287. With the Pope continuing to resist all the pleas of Henry VIII for an annulment of his marriage to Catherine of Aragon, Cranmer is credited with the suggestion that the theological schools of the great European universities should be canvassed for support for the thesis that it was unlawful for a man to marry his brother's wife. This thus became a very early instance of an exercise in public relations. The number of missing universities show that contrary opinions were not included, but enough supporters were found to salve the King's "tender" conscience. The original Latin version was intended to influence European opinion. This translation aimed at the home market is unsigned, but it is such a remarkable piece of "modern" English that the attribution to Thomas Cranmer must stand. With the subsequent divorce, Henry took an irreversible step towards the break with Rome; this in turn injected the religious factor into the continuing struggle between England and Ireland making this a work of seminal importance in the history of the relationship between the two islands. Sweeney 5297. Provenance: The Britwell Court Library copy which was sold by Sothebys on May 5th 1920, lot 150 to John Burns, who inscribed and dated his acquisition. Provenance: The estate of Tony Sweeney
