Norman Clive Catherine (South African 1949-) ENCORE signed and dated 2007 oil on canvas PROVENANCEStrauss & Co, Johannesburg, 9 November 2015, Lot 275 120 by 150cm In the current lot we see Catherine using bright, primary colours in stark contrast to each other, giving the work a sense of popping away from the surface upon which it is mounted. This implementation of colour heightens the exaggerated action articulated by the bold forms utilized. At first this work may inspire laughter but upon further consideration a pertinent comment on corporate culture is observable. The figure in the painting takes a low bow in subservience. His hand 289 Norman Clive Catherine (South African 1949 - ) ENCOREsigned and dated 2007 oil on canvas 120 by 150cm R 500 000 - R 700 000gestures, however, suggest anything but obsequiousness. This imagery proposes, perhaps, the theatrics that play out on the corporate ladder; those desperate to climb are willing to grovel gruellingly to take the next step up, yet with every step a greater degree of pride and greed manifest within the individual. The double-edged portrayal is presented in a jovial fashion, illustrating the distinct shift in mood of Catherine’s work in a post-apartheid, democratic South Africa.- Kayleen Wrigley
