UMAYYAD, TEMP. ‘ABD AL-MALIK B. MARWAN (65-86h)Dirham, no mint name, 79hOBVERSE: In border: annulets O O O O OREVERSE: In border: annulets o o o o o In field: wa at end of second lineWEIGHT: 2.86gREFERENCE: Klat 1CONDITION: Almost extremely fine, extremely rare and historically important NOTE: After the first purely Islamic gold dinars were issued in 77h (see lot 8), ‘Abd al-Malik b. Marwan soon turned his attention to producing a related silver coinage. The very first examples were struck in 78h at five different mints: Adharbayjan and Armenia in the North, Kufa in southern Iraq, and Shaqq al-Taymara and Jayy (both parts of Isfahan). All are of the highest rarity with fewer than ten ‘year 78’ dirhams known in total. The reasons why these particular mints should have been the first to strike post-Reform dirhams are not fully understood, but it was probably the result of a combination of local factors rather than an overall central plan. Production of post-Reform dirhams began in earnest in 79h, with some forty different mints striking the new coinage. Not surprisingly, most of these had previously been striking Arab-Sasanian silver drachms. This had always been a decentralized coinage with dozens of mints active at any one time, and it was an obvious step to include the name of the mint on the new dirhams also. But Damascus, the westernmost of the early dirham mints, was located in the former Byzantine province of Syria where silver coins had been uncommon. Here, the prototype for the silver coinage was not the Arab-Sasanian drachm but the post-Reform gold dinar, which did not need to be explicit about the place of minting because they were struck only in Damascus. This was probably why the very first Damascus dirhams, including the piece offered here, were also struck without a mint-name - perhaps it was to be understood that all dirhams were struck at Damascus unless otherwise stated. If so, this experiment cannot have lasted long as Dimashq 79h dirhams are the most plentiful coins of this date surviving today. An alternative theory is that this extremely rare mintless type may have been a pattern rather than a currency issue.
F MORELLI "Zither player and gypsy girl seated upon a step", oil on canvas, signed bottom right, 52 cm x 42 cm CONDITION REPORTS Under UV light picture does show some areas of restoration along the right-hand side approx. a third of the way down in the background, there are several pinhead size areas of restoration, and a couple of long stripes measuring approx. 5 cm each to the background, there has been some restoration to the back of the gentleman's hairline and the nearside of his cheek towards his jawline, a slight spot above one eyebrow and a small amount under his chin, there is also an approx. 3 cm x 2 cm area of restoration to his hand near front on the games board and also under his shoulder, the girl has had a small area of restoration around her near eye and just under her jawline, there are also one or two other small areas of restoration around the outside of the picture where it has clearly rubbed under the frame. Has definitely been re-stretchered and possibly re-lihed but it is all taped down so difficult to tell. To the naked eye there is quite a lot of cracking to the oil throughout, and the picture appears quite dirty and would benefit from a clean, the cracking is towards the top third of the picture and around the gentleman's face although the paint does seems fairly secure and this may have been secured during a previous restoration, however at the extreme top left side where the white background is the paint does appear slightly loose in this area. Frame overall appears reasonable, but there are one or two knocks to the gilding and some slight cracking to the rope twist decoration throughout, and would benefit from sympathetic restoration.

Naval General Service Medal 1793 - 1840, three clasps, 8th June 1810 Boat Service, 28 June 1810 Boat Service, the battle of Lissa 1811 (James Rennie, Master's Mate). James Rennie, Master's Mate, is confirmed on the roll as aboard H.M.S. Cerberus during the battle of Lissa for which 132 clasps were issued . The boat service clasp for the 28th June 1810, is a known and recorded clasp for which only 27 were issued. The boat service clasp for the 8th June 1810 is believed to be much rarer, as no trace of its award to any recipient can be currently traced through our research. On the 4th of February the British 18-pounder 32-gun frigate Cerberus, Captain Henry Whitby, and 38-gun frigate Active Captain James Alexander Gordon, cruising off the north-east coast of Italy, discovered four vessels lying at an anchor in the port of " Peitichi " or Pescaro. It being nearly calm, Captain Whitby despatched Lieutenant George Have of the Active, with the barge of each frigate, to endeavour to cut them out. Lieutenant Haye and his little party, although exposed to a heavy fire of musketry from the soldiers quartered at the place, succeeded, with the loss of only one man wounded, in capturing three of the vessels, and in destroying the fourth after removing her cargo. They were all merchant trabaccolos, last from Ancona. On the 12th, in the morning, several vessels were discovered at anchor in the harbour of Ortona on the same coast ; and, as the wind was light, Captain Whitby despatched the boats of the two frigates, under the orders of Lieutenant James Dickinson, first of the CERBERUS, assisted by Lieutenant George Haye and George Cumpson, Lieutenant of marines Peter Mears and master's mates James Gibson and JAMES RENNIE, to endeavour to bring out the vessels from the strong position in which they were moored. The harbour of Ortona is formed by a large pier, running out into the sea and connected with a range of hills leading to the town, which stands on the top of the highest, completely commanding the vessels in the harbour and in the road to it. At 10 a.m., on the near approach of the boats, a fire of great guns and small arms was opened from an armed Venetian trabaccolo, not before observed, and from soldiers posted on the beach and hills. The British seamen and marines instantly gave three cheers, and, pushing on, carried all before them. Lieutenant Dickinson, in the gig of the Cerberus, supported by MR RENNIE in the barge, boarded and almost instantly carried the armed trabaccolo, although she mounted six guns and was full of men. Lieutenant Dickinson then landed, with the marines under Lieutenant Mears and the small-arm men under MR RENNIE ; and this party had to climb up the rocks by their hands, with the prospect of falling down a precipice every step they took. At length the strong post was attained ; and, while the launches with their carronades kept the soldiers and inhabitants in check, MR RENNIE planted the British colours at the very gates of the town. The seamen then secured the vessels in the harbour, which, besides the armed trabaccolo, were 10 in number, and all laden with wheat, oil, hemp, &c. ; and the marines and division on shore burnt two large magazines, filled with all sorts of naval and military stores destined for the garrison of Corfu. Having, by 3 p.m., executed the whole of this important service, Lieutenant Dickinson and his party got back to their ships with so comparatively slight a loss as four men wounded.
