WOLSELEY GARNET: (1833-1913) Anglo-Irish Field Marshal, Commander-in-Chief of the Forces 1895-1900. A good A.L.S., G. Wolseley, four pages, 8vo, War Office, 20th August 1881, to [John Robert] Dunn, marked 'Private'. Wolseley states that he has 'not been in any humour' for writing letters to his friends in South Africa since the death of Sir George Colley and 'since the occurrence of so many events in that country which all good Englishmen must sincerely deplore' although continues 'Your recent brilliant success has however shown what one good Englishman with his heart in the right place has been able to accomplish, and I cannot resist the temptation of writing you these few lines to congratulate you upon the event'. Wolseley further remarks 'My view of Zululand affairs has always been to put down rebellion in any district by the united efforts of the other Chiefs, but except such interference to avoid mixing ourselves up as much as possible in the internal affairs of Zululand. The less we interfere with the Chiefs the better unless we mean to annex the country, and for this reason I cannot say that I view the proposal to levy a hut tax with satisfaction, that is, that we should have anything to do with its imposition. If the Chiefs wish to do so, all well and good: taxing the men will force them to work, and that is the first step towards improving their condition; but what I dread is any semblance of our lending our authority in any way towards enforcing any taxes whatever' and adds 'I often envy you your independent and wild life, for I am heartily sick of all the twaddle and maudlin cowardice which have now taken hold of the English mind to the exclusion of all those manly virtues on which we formerly prided ourselves and which certainly enabled us to build up the greatest Empire that has ever existed', further reflecting 'How long that Empire can be held together on the new principles I know not, but not for long if we go on as we have been. I always look back with great pleasure to the time when we were associated together & I shall always remember the very kind manner in which you helped me when I had a difficult task to perform….' A letter of fine content relating to Zululand and the British Empire. Some overall age wear and dust staining and a few splits to the edges of folds repaired with Sellotape, slightly affecting a few words of text (which remain perfectly legible) but not the signature, GJohn Robert Dunn (1834-1895) South African Settler, Hunter & Diplomat of British descent. Dunn served as Cetshwayo's secretary and diplomatic adviser in all matters related to the British and was rewarded with Chieftianship, land, livestock and two Zulu virgins. Married to a total of 48 Zulu wives during his lifetime, Dunn fathered some 117 children. During the Anglo-Zulu war of 1879 he raised 'Dunn's Scouts' and served as political and intelligence officer. George Colley (1835-1881) British Major General, Governor and Commander-in-Chief of Natal 1880.
