HEROIC AGE OF ANTARCTIC EXPLORATION - HERBERT PONTING (BRITISH, 1870-1935), ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH SUMMERTIME, THE OPENING-UP OF THE ICE original carbon print, blindstamp signature lower right framed and behind glassTaken as part of the Terra Nova expedition to the South Pole, Ponting had set up a dark room on the ship and proceed to document the remarkable landscapes and nature that he encountered, later published and sold as part of a celebrated exhibition in 1913 by the Fine Art Society. This particular example was intended to demonstrate the contrast between berg- and floe-ice with the Adélie penguins a fortunate addition to the foreground; when taking this particular photograph Ponting recounted that he had been obvserved by a killer whale and was fortunate that it settled on other prey as he would have been an easy target on the thin sheet ice (see Ponting, The Great White South). image 57cm x 73cm, 74cm x 91cm overall Image of the reverse and further close-ups available; condition of print appears good, sealed in the frame so cannot speak to how it has been mounted and whether attached to a backing or 'floating', cannot speak to the corners or edges as these are also obscured, glass dirty particularly to corners and edges, some surface flecks but appear to be part of the original, no noticeable fading, slight black marks to centre left and presumably some surface dirt, frame heavily worn, will certainly benefit from being reframed
