* TOM MACKENZIE (SCOTTISH 1947 - 2018), HOAN ISLAND coloured etching on paper, signed, titled and numbered 15/75 image size 30cm x 45cm, overall size 49cm x 62cm Mounted, framed and under glass. Note: Tom MacKenzie was educated at Portree High School and at 17 left home to enrol at Duncan of Jordanstone School of Art in Dundee. This did not work out and after a year he went to London. His pursuit of art continued at evening classes in life drawing while working in a variety of jobs by day. In 1976 he moved back to Scotland, joining a team of many talents at the Glasgow Print Studio. John Taylor, a colleague and long-time friend, says: "Tom MacKenzie’s art was made from the Isle of Skye’s unique cornucopia of visual riches: the huge, notched and jagged coastline; sea lochs with many rocky islands; the Cuillins, the most awesome mountains in Britain." Living and working on the lovely Isle of Skye, Tom MacKenzie was renowned for his wonderful colour etchings of the island and the West Coast of Scotland. These large and very stylish etchings are appreciated and collected worldwide. Working from his studio and workshop in Portree, the island’s capital, MacKenzie used three steel plates to produce his etchings and limited the editions to 75 or less, printed on 300gm, Arches waterleaf paper. He was a very popular figure in Portree where he lived and worked and a much-respected artist throughout Scotland and far beyond. During 2021 we accepted a private collection of fifteen Tom MacKenzie etchings which were split between several auctions. New UK auction records were achieved with several individual etchings selling for in excess of £300 each and the highest price and current UK record price was achieved on 23rd January 2022 when lot 224 "Loch Hasco, Quirange" a 20 x 27.5cm etching sold for £410 (hammer).
* WILLIE RODGER RSA RGI (SCOTTISH 1930 - 2018), MARY, WIFE OF WILLIAM OF ORANGE linocut on paper, signed, titled and numbered 52/100 image size 29cm x 18cm, overall size 51cm x 42cm Mounted, framed and under glass. Note: The Royal Scottish Academy website describes Willie Rodger as "one of the most significant artist-printmakers in recent Scottish art history". Born in Kirkintilloch in 1930, Rodger studied Graphics and Printmaking at Glasgow School of Art from 1948 to 1953. He received a rigorous education from a course that, at the time, only accepted the most skilled draughtsmen. By graduation Rodger had already sold two prints to the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and went on to a career in advertising. However, he became disillusioned with the cut and thrust of the commercial world and an opportunity to change careers and return to Scotland came about with a teaching vacancy at Lenzie Academy, then as Principal Teacher of Art at Clydebank High School, a post he held until early retirement in 1987. He was elected to the Royal Scottish Academy in 1989 and awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Stirling in 1999. Our auctions have established several new UK auction record prices for Willie Rodger prints and in The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction of 28th February 2021 lot 562 "Reverie" by Willie Rodger achieved a new (and current) auction record for a print by the artist selling at £1200 (hammer).
* ROBERT STEWART (SCOTTISH 1924-1995), UNTITLED print on linen image size 42cm x 42cm, overall size 46cm x 46cm Framed. Note: Printed at The Glasgow School of Art with permission of his estate. Wall hanging designed by Robert Stewart in postwar Britain. He produced paintings, ceramics and murals but it is his textiles that have been most influential. He won many awards and became head of printed textile department at The Glasgow School of Art in 1949 where he worked for 35 years.
* HANNAH FRANK (SCOTTISH 1908 - 2008), IN THOUGHTS FROM THE VISIONS OF THE NIGHT WHEN DEEP SLEEP FALLETH ON MEN (1930) lithograph on paper, signed in pencil, titled and dated 1930 image size 36cm x 25cm, overall size 55cm x 40cm Mounted, framed and under glass. Note: Since McTear's first promoted Hannah Frank's spectacular work in 2011, the prices for her ever more rare signed prints have continued to rise with many current prices being more than five times higher than those achieved barely a decade ago. The latest UK auction record figure for a single signed lithograph was most recently achieved (twice) in our auction on 24th October 2021 and now stands at £820 (hammer). Note 2: Hannah Frank was the last living link to the Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau period. She studied at the Glasgow School of Art and Glasgow University in the 1920`s and her haunting pen and ink drawings have been exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Scottish Academy and Royal Glasgow Institute. A series of lithographs of some of her 90 drawings were made in the 1960's and again in the 1980's to satisfy demand for her work after exhibitions in Edinburgh and Glasgow. Only a relatively few of these prints were hand signed (in pencil) by Hannah and it's understood that only one print was ever editioned (numbered) in a conventional manner. A major exhibition at the Royal Glasgow Institute in 2006 brought her work to a new generation of admirers and received considerable press coverage. Her work toured for five years in the UK and the USA culminating in an exhibition at Glasgow University which opened on her 100th birthday 23rd August 2008. After her death, she was awarded a posthumous Honorary Doctorate at Glasgow University and Glasgow City Council`s Lord Provost`s Award For Art (2009).
