Henry Cliffe (1919-1983) - still life of fish and onions, watercolour and gouache, 11.75" x 12" - ** The artist was born in Scarborough, Yorkshire and met the painter William Scott in Wales then in 1946 enrolled as a student at Bath Academy of Art. He was invited to join the staff and later became an influential teacher marrying his colleague Valerie May. The work of Cliffe and his students were shown in a number of International exhibitions. Cliffe had his first solo show of paintings at The Redfern Gallery in 1956, and three years later his first one man print show at St. George's Gallery. The sculptures can be found at the Hepworth, Wakefield, Yorkshire as well as at the Royal West of England Academy and the British Academy. Other works by the artist are held by The Victoria Art Gallery Bath
