ELISABETH FRINK RA (1930-1993) (ARR) A framed and glazed 1973 lithograph, 'Eagle Owl' (Wiseman 87) in colours, pencil signed and numbered 170/250. Christies Contemporary Art publishing blind stamp bottom right. 77.5cm x 57.5cm The print looks to be in very good order, there is a slight wave to the paper in the centre but there is no obvious signs of foxing or tears. It looks to be in its original frame but I am unsure as how the print is attached to the backing paper although there is no sign of any glue staining. The frame and glass is dirty and there are a few scuffs to the frame itself.
Mabel Gear (British, 1900-1997)Black and White - A Pair of Poodles signed 'M. GEAR' (lower right)oil on canvas39 x 29.5cm (15 3/8 x 11 5/8in).Footnotes:Gear was born at Ashford Rectory in Suffolk. She studied at the Colchester School of Art, and at Bushy in Hertfordshire, where her tutor H. Septimus Power, an Australian animal and equestrian artist greatly influenced her. Between 1921 and 1928 Gear exhibited at the Royal Academy (11), and regularly at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters (25), the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour (10), the Royal Society of British Artists (2), the Royal Scottish Academy (1), the Society of Women Artists (3), the Walker Art Gallery (8), Goupil Gallery and in Sweden and Paris. She was elected to the ROI in 1925, and RI in 1927. Upon Gear's election to the ROI and RI, her ability at painting animals and her popularity were quickly recognised by the postcard publishers Valentine & Sons of Dundee and London. She became their biggest single selling artist. Her popularity continued and she worked extensively on other commercial commissions for The Medici Society, Raphael Tuck and Vivian Mansell. Like Maud Earl, Gear, produced work for Black and White whisky's advertising campaigns. Gear worked almost exclusively in watercolour, and to a lesser extent gouache, working over pencil with added white body colour, ideal for reproduction in print. Her oils are therefore quite rare. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
William Henry Hamilton Trood (British, 1860-1899)Motherhood - A Springer Spaniel and Her Litter signed and dated 'W.H.Trood/1893' (lower left)oil on canvas30.5 x 41cm (12 x 16 1/8in).Footnotes:Trood was an animal painter and sculptor, very often of dog subjects and hunting scenes. From his home at 13 Trafalgar Studios, Kings Road, London, he kept a menagerie in the garden, until the neighbours complained of the noise. After this complaint, he reduced his collection to a fox, a badger, and an otter, all of which he allowed to run loose in his studio. He once tried to hypnotise a dog into staying still. The hallmarks of Trood's work are tight painting technique with great attention to anatomical detail and often composed with Victorian sentimentality. This skill, but also his emotive subjects, appealed to the public of the day and he enjoyed success as a commercial artist popularising his works through print. Publishers such as Arthur Tooth & Sons were quick to see his public popularity, using illustrated catalogues to show his work engraved by S. A. Edwards.Trood exhibited extensively at institutions including the Royal Society of Artists in Birmingham (4); the Dudley Gallery (1); the Grosvenor Gallery (2); the Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts (2); the Manchester City Art Gallery (6); the Royal Academy (23); the Royal Society of British Artists (20); the Royal Institute of Oil Painters (4); and Arthur Tooth & Sons Gallery (17).Today Trood's works can be seen in The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. And one of the American Kennel Club's most famous paintings is his 1888, A Domestic Scene. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
