Graham Dews (British b. 1974)UntitledModern art screen print with hand finished spray painted backgroundSigned, dated & numbered 33/35 in pencilFramed and glazed76 x 57 cm (29" x 22")An English conceptual graffiti artist, Paris rose to global fame in 2011 when he worked alongside Coldplay to create a massive piece of spray can art for the cover of their fifth studio, Mylo Xyloto, as well as providing artwork for subsequent world tours. Paris regularly participates in British music events. His work can easily be identified, with its unique combination of atmospheric colours, detailed and highly stylised line work and space age effects, especially cracks and shines. Both of these works were designed to be lightweight and durable. They are from a collection of over 50 similar pieces aimed to Tour Across the UK and even Further afield.  The content of the imagery is very autobiographical, much of it depicting key moments in his 30+ years as a writer.“The whole series was exhibited in Frome, Somerset in May 2022, billed as ‘A Touring Exhibition for Changing Times’  there was probably some thinly veiled social commentary about property prices and the division of wealth in the UK...but I generally try to steer clear of Political Statements if I can.The future of this project , and indeed the future of this country is now seriously in doubt....”⦁ Paris 2022This lot is also sold subject to Artists Resale Rights, details of which can be found in our Terms and Conditions.

Mr Jago (British b. 1972)'Walking Wounded'20085 Colour screen print hand finished by the artistSigned, dated and numbered 12 of 75 in pencil56 x 56 cm (22 x 22 in)Duncan Jago’s career as Mr. Jago began as a formative artist in Bristol’s aclaimed graffiti scene. He initiated the Scrawl movement, a school of street art that elected members based on their abilities with line, movement, and narrative composition. Jago was featured in the seminal, eponymous book Scrawl published in 1999. Having studied illustration at the University of the West of England, Mr. Jago’s style, initially heavily illustrative, has evolved into something far more abstracted and expressive. Mr. Jago has taken spray painting to a level of sophistication rarely seen in the medium; there is maturity and depth to his use of colour which he uses to describe the natural world and the cosmos, as he says: “A love of nature has been the biggest influence on my work, the forms and flows that exist within it seem to be appearing … more and more nowadays.” These references to landscape imagery with less emphasis on gesture and brushstrokes, combined with a strong focus on colour and its emotional function, is strongly reminiscent of the mid-century Colour Field movement, pioneered by the Abstract Expressionist Mark Rothko. Mr Jago is also influenced by painters such as Jules Olitski, Dan Christensen and Albert Stadler.   This lot is also sold subject to Artists Resale Rights, details of which can be found in our Terms and Conditions.

Ian Francis (British, b. 1979) 'A girl moves back home with her pet dog'Original print on canvasSigned in black marker to the verso40 x 60 cm (15 x 23 in) Ian Francis is a British mixed-media artist from Bristol. Drawing and painting on canvas he creates abstract scenes of colour and shapes which often feature individuals, either alone or in a group, which are placed to either interact with the surroundings drawn by Francis or are effected by it. Francis’ works have been featured as part of the opening of URBAN NATION Museum 2017.  Influenced by a variety of pictures and visuals he sees throughout the day, Francis uses this stream of images to guide him to creating abstract, multi-layered and often grimy, dark and highly contrasted artworks. His compositions are built on a mash up of said visuals that he strips from their original meaning and story and weaves them into a new identity. Often combining different elements of older paintings he has done, they seem to form a multidimensional platform surrounded by an empty, black space. Holding a degree in illustration and an alumnus of the University of West England, Francis was heavily influenced by conceptual art and video installations of the 90s, a style that he works into his art by using gel to create a high contrast flat finish that resembles the effect of a high definition monitor. This lot is also sold subject to Artists Resale Rights, details of which can be found in our Terms and Conditions.

Nicolò Boldrini - The stigmatisation of St Francis - C.1530 / Description: Very rare woodcut after the Titian drawing. St. Francis from Assisi and his brother Leo in a wood with mountains, buildings, a roe deer and a small cross within a halo of light. Unsigned, attributed to Boldrini. Stylistically, the print is close to the destroyed altarpiece of S. Pietro martyr (formerly Venice, Saints John and Paul) executed in the years 1526-1530. According the Giorgio Fini Foundation: The woodcut is cited both by Vasari (1568) and by Ridolfi (1648). Mariette believed that Titian had drawn directly on the matrix. The print according to Muraro and Rosand dates back to the end of the third decade, as evidenced by the connections with the altarpiece of San Pietro Martyr, formerly in the church of SS. Giovanni e Paolo, commissioned in 1526 and delivered in 1530. / Dimensions: 29,00 x 43,10 cm / Condition: The impression is good and it has full border line and one centimeter margins on laid paper from the period. Small defects to the margins has been enforced with some paper strips on the backside, as is the vertical middle fold that has teared in a bit. Overall with the acid free passe-partout covering the marginal defects an enjoyable example of this rare work. / Literature: Passavant 1860-64 / Le Peintre-Graveur (VI.235.59) --- D. Rosand and M. Raphael's Raising of Brazen Serpent, by Caietanus le Poer / Description: A spectacular rare and large engraving showing the tapestry of The Raising of the Brazen Serpent from the Story of Moses. With 'Raph. de Urb. In.' in lower left corner and with name and titles of Guglielmo Gonzaga, Duke of Mantua (r.1550-87). This print is from a series generally dated 1728, reproducing seven tapestries from a series designed for Ferrante Gonzaga on the life of Moses, kept in Mantua after Ferrante's death in 1557.Scholars have generally assumed that the set of the Story of Moses was woven in the workshop of Nicolas Karcher in Mantua, after designs showing stylistic relation to Giulio Romano, who has often been credited as the designer of these. All the extant tapestries - now in the Museo del Duomo, Milan - carry the arms of Guglielmo Gonzaga, the exact identity of the set's commissioner and its execution date remain controversial. So the tapestry was designed by probably by Raphael, probably influenced by Guilio Romano, and the engraving executed by Italian engraver Caietanus le Poer. / Dimensions: 38,60 x 40,60 cm / Condition: This print, on a dense laid paper is in excellent condition. Complete with the image borderline all around. No folds, tears ort stains. / Literature: Ruland p.259 D.II.5 ----- Catalogue of the Department of Prints and Drawings in the British Museum. v. P. Federico Barocci - Madonna on the clouds / Description: Splendid etching taken from a subject by the master from Urbino printed with richly toned inking. The high quality and softness of this engraving, engraved in counterpart to that of Barocci, make the etching very interesting from a collector's point of view. The tones are rich in chiaroscuro and the face shows the dotted technique, well used by the master from Urbino. Among the various versions derived from the subject of Barocci, this is the closest to the original and suggests a master linked to the Baroque school. With signature F.B.V.F. (Federico Barocci Urbino Fecit) / Dimensions: 16,00 x 10,80 cm / Condition: Printed on a dense laid paper, in goos condition, without restorations. Trimmed on plate border with traces of tread margins. A couple of flattened folds. / Literature: Bartsch / Le Peintre graveur (XVII.3.2 copy) --- (Text from Michael Bury, 'The Print in Italy 1550-1620', London, 2001, cat.no.43) Barocci made only four prints. Judged in terms of the control of etching technique, this and the Stigmatization are the least proficient of the four. There is therefore a strong reason for supposing that they were the earliest. The angel heads in the upper corners of this one are very like those at the top of the Perdono and it is probable that it was made around 1581, / Medium: Etching /Circa: 1580-1620

This and other engravings by the Sadelers were crucial to the diffusion of knowledge of the work of the Bassano family of painters and thus to establishing their international reputation (Aikema and Brown, 1999, p.560). Pan identified the Blaffer Foundation picture in Houston, signed by both Jacopo and Francesco Bassano, as the original of the composition engraved here. Given that this would place the print after Bruegel's own death in 1569, it is likely that this was a design intended by Bruegel for engraving, but which had not yet been carried out at the time of his death. Pieter van der Borcht (1535-1608) - Abraham with Angels - Rare large format / Description: Abraham feeding the three angels, New Hollstein 3. An exceptional large plate signed and dated 'Fecit Pe. V. Borcht 1586'. The subject with Abraham bringing a plate of food to the three angels siting on a hill below a hughe tree, overlooking a vaste Flemish style world landscape with villages and wind-mills. The landscape with the round city gate, round temple and dolomite like mountains in the back, a fortress on a kliff seems to connect with dozens of other landscapes by Bril and Breughel who always repeat the same group of elements. This is a rare print. Only one other found online (Museum Boymans van Beuningen) / Dimensions: 27,00 x 35,40 cm / Condition: Outstanding sharp impression on a dense laid paper trimmed to the borderline. / Literature: New Hollstein (Dutch & Flemish) / The New Hollstein: Dutch and Flemish etchings, engravings and woodcuts 1450-1700 (3) / Medium: Etching /Circa: 1586

Etienne Delaune (?) - The Labours of July / Description: Extremely rare and very interesting print from a series of The Labours of The Month. It is a variant, or other state (?), or very close copy, of the series made in 1561 by Etienne Delaune (Robert-Dumesnil -IX.73.225-236). Image and border decoration are exactly the same but instead of a double text line in the cartouche, it has the name of the month and one line of text. The impression looks superior and quality of engraving equals or surpasses the quality of the images by Delaune I have found. / Dimensions: 17,50 x 23,50 cm / Condition: Good inked black contrasted impression with good plate tone on early watermarked laid paper. Early impression, guide lines for text still visible. / Literature: Robert-Dumesnil 1835-71 / Le Peintre-Graveur Français (IX.73.225-236) --- Robert-Dumesnil also records a series of copies by Johann Bussemacher. There exists indeed a series with exact title and one text line as described for owner print, and it bears the added text 'Coloniae Agrippinae excudit Jan Buchsmachr' but in my opinion that is probably a publishers address and gives no indication on the actual engraver who made the print. / Medium: Engraving /Circa: 1561-1600
