Mazot (F. publisher), Olivarius Cromwell Exercituum Angliae Reipublicae Dux Generalis..., circa 1650, uncoloured engraving, laid on linen and mounted on a wooden stretcher, Cromwell's coat of arms below the image, very slight abrasion to the image, slight worming to the lower right corner of the title, 565 x 425 mmQTY: (1)NOTE:The British Musem holds another state of this print with an additional eight lines of verse in Latin below the title. The print is a full-length equestrian portrait of Oliver Cromwell, slightly turned to the right, one hand at his hip holding his riding crop and the other holding the reins of his black stallion, very much in the manner of a Roman emperor. He is dressed in a doublet with high boots over his breeches, a plain collar over his gorget and a chain of office about his neck, a plumed hat on his head with his pistol in a holster at his side. In the distance is a view of London from the south bank of the Thames, clearly showing St Pauls with its square spire which would be destroyed in the Great Fire of London in 1666.
